Tailgate rattle V70-XC70 2009

My 09 XC 70 has a tailgate rattle. It does not sound like the rattle of my 98 V 70 for which I bought the tailgate panel kit and replaced all of the fasteners. It is a tinny light rattle; almost like a heat shield on a VW GTI just much softer.

I did read the post about torx screws and the striker plate; however, the newfangled contraption has two rubber fenders at the base and a little button at the bottom of the \_/ shaped locking piece on the tailgate. Probably a sensor. I do not think anything in the tailgate should be loose since it has an electric close and therefore is never slammed.

I have ridden in the back seat as we travelled over Michigan's roads and leaned back and palpitated all of the plastic trim in the cargo bay. It sounds like it is coming from the tailgate behind all of the carpeting.

Is there an incense I can burn to heal it? Or does it involve the burning of dollars with my independent Volvo guru? He has just recently expanded to a polished concrete floor multi lift operation so I would like to do the repair myself. But then this car uses To TAL, as the French say, synthetic. As the Germans say, I must be to TAL messhuga.

Please excuse my sarcasm, I expected the new car karma to last more than 7 years on a 15 year car.

This is a tough one. Does your car have a spare tire? If so, check that everything in the well is secure and your can of fix-a-flat is not loose.

You really don't want to take the panel off, it is a pain. If the rattles are easy to recreate on empty roads, try driving with the tailgate up and try to hear it above the dash buzzer warning you of pending doom.

There is a latch adjustment for the electric tailgate, but I don't know if that is programmable or if it is a screwdriver adjustment.

I am embarrassed to say that four car mats, a trenching shovel, a first aid kit, sundry replacement fuses and bulbs, a tow strap, snow brushes, and an air compressor all live under the cargo bay. They are all wedged in with carpet strips.

I will tighten the spare tire and let you know if all is well. However, I do believe that it is in the tailgate. How can I find out more whether the latch adjustment is programmable or not?

And I do agree, my back does feel better when I am sitting in a Volvo.

Standard trunk items. If the carpet strips are not used for any other purpose, like getting traction after getting stuck in snow/mud, then I suggest using old towels instead which can come in handy for cleaning up after changing a wheel, etc. Towels also take up less room.

You still need to determine if the latch is in the lock or the rear hatch itself. Raise the hatch and bang in the bottom of it with your fist, just in case there is a nut or bolt that came loose.

After the hatch is closed, can you push on the bottom and get any play?

My other brand of SUV has a separate latching motor that doesn't always engage. I found that after closing the hatch, just pulling on the hatch starts up the motor and the lock engages. I suppose there is a 'fix' for that, but I am too cheap to go to the dealer and spend $$$ for a new latch motor and $$$ for labor.

I need to begin with wiping egg off face.

I went to the Volvo dealer and got the diagram for the tailgate assembly and the fender part numbers since I believed it was on the tailgate. And then I went to the guru and he came out and pounded his fist on the back of the tailgate and the license plate rattled ever so softly despite being attached with four stainless screws. Four anodized washers took care of it.

Thank you for your excellent advice for the repair of my latest Duck Blind car, as the Swedes used to say; or Swedish bankers car, as others used to say, depending on how I am feeling.
