Very very quick wastegate question... 850 1995

Hi all,

It's a lazy saturday afternoon and I'm awfully bored so I'm going to try that wastegate rod trick that a lot of people have been talking about. The instuctions on volvotuning.com say about 3 to 5 turns. The end of the rod is flat, so do I want 3-5 180 degreeturns, or 3-5 360 degree turns? Thanks a lot. I think intuitively I would do 180 degree turns (one turn equals turning the flat end around) but I wanted to make sure. Thanks a lot

Alex

So, the consensus is that the wastegate mod will only last for a few days until the computer re-learns and you have to reset the ECU by pulling No. 1 fuse for a few mnutes? Is there any way to do this mod and make it permanent?

uh... well the mod I did is sure permanent. I have 5.5 turns into the thing and many, many hundreds of miles since the mod and believe me, the effects are still evident. Albeit, a little smoother power curve than right after a chip reset.

So, is the idea to reset the computer by pulling fuse 1 for a few minutes right after making the adjustment thereby making the adjustment permanent?

Re: Very very quick wastegate question... 850 1995

Well, no. (at least I'm pretty sure the answer is no)

Over time, (some say 20-30 minutes, other 100s of miles) The Engine Computer "adjusts" somewhat to drive style, gas quality, driving conditions etc. By reseting after any engine related mod you are allowing the EC to adjust more quickly to that mod. In addition, when you reset the EC the engine seems to have more power. Some people reset right before they go to the track for the extra power. The stock settings must be richer or something.

Anyway, adjusting the EC will not make the wastegate mod permanent as far as I know.

What I think made a difference in my mod was that I turned the wastegate actuator connecter far enough in that the EC cannot easily overcome the mod. Likely the danger here is that I run the risk of too much back presure on shifts. You see, initially I tried 4.5 turns and after what seemed like 200-300 miles, most of the change seemed to wear off. Since then, I tried 1 more turn and now after about 1K more miles, it's still going strong, just a smoother power curve when the EC adapted.

This is all based on my experience with my car and my theories are guesses based on what I've read on this board and in other places.

Does that make sense to anyone else or is it all hogwash?

Re: Very very quick wastegate question... 850 1995

I first did 3 180 deg turns and thot that was that. until i saw someone post on the BB he did 4 1/2 turns. I was like going ... 1/2?!

i went back and did another 3 180 degs turns after that.

now there's one thing peculiar about our ECUs - it's SMART, it's ALIVE! it will reset the baseline boost to stock settings after a coupla days of driving. the initial result of quicker spool-up after the turns will disappear after a while when the ECU learns what you've done and resets the whole thing!

I was pretty contented with the initail 1 1/2 turns until the reset happened. so i went and did the further 1 1/2. the reset was even quicker this time - 2-3 days and it was back to norm.

Gary Griessman (did i get that rite?) posted in another BB thread an excellent method of preventing ECU resets - just remove Fuse No. 1 in the fuesbox for 2-3 minutes. I can safely testify it works!

btw just my view but 3 full turns is definitely safe. also, i don't believe turning up boost over the limit will blow our engines. 1st thing that'll go wrong is engine check lit comes on. if you do a search on the topic you'll find our turbo will not overboost beyond ECU set boost limits (on my SAM thats 1.0bar constant, 1.1 when spike).

Wow, that fuse thing is a nifty trick. I just did the wastegate adjustment but haven't run the car yet. When should I do the fuse thing? When the car's off? when the car's on? after I drive it? Thanks

you can't start the car if you remove the ECU, likewise if you remove the fuse that connects the ECU.

just drive around post-wastegate tutn till you detect the turbo spool-up is "back to normal" ie. as it was pre-w/gate turn. THEN, remove the fuse after you've parked you car. fit it back on 2-3 minutes later. that shd do the trick.

... well it has for me for the last 3 days!

btw, from my experince, on 1st attempt, the post w/gate joy shd last 3-4 days or thereabouts.

        have fun!

Re: Very very quick wastegate question... 850 1995

    Hey Alex,

I just did the three 180 degree turns ( flat portions turned 3 complete turns) and went for a spin.

I would recommend doing no more and then testing.

My 850 builds boost sooner and stays on boost longer with this modification.

Matter of fact, I may back off one turn (180 degree) to effectively have turned one full 360.

Cannot really imagine going much further than three 180's - don't want to blow the engine.

Anyone else care to comment ?

If you need to be cautious then yes, do 1 or 2 turns at a time and see how it goes--on my '95 850 turbo equipped w/a Wetterauer ECU, I had the thing at 7 turns and still no problems. This, of course, varies as each car came from the factory with variations. And don't worry about "blowing" your engine--the ECU won't let that happen. Worse that thing can happen is you set off a check engine light and at the worse, suffer some driveability problems. If this happens, just back off the number of turns, read the codes stored and reset the ECU.

Gee, everyone else says 3 or 4 full 360 degree turns. Do you think this is bad? Was your 480 turn adequate? Thanks a bunch

Results may vary by car since they don't all start at the

exact same spot to begin with. I think you should make small

changes when doing this and test-drive after each change.

Ray, do you happen to know why the factory quality control and initial wastegate adjustment would give different initial positions from one car to another of the same year and model? Does the engine maker do any individual tuning?

Re: Very very quick wastegate question... ALL

The factory adjustment is made using a gauge that measures

pressure (or vacuum, I forget which) that is required to start

opening the wastegate. Presumably, it is set by hand so there

is some variation. I have seen a report here by someone who

noted it was not a bad idea to really measure it and make sure

it is at the prescribed factory settings (but most people just

twiddle with it and don't actually make any measurements). I

would conjecture that settings drift a bit over time as the

            parts wear or break-in, too.

By the way, on my 98 S70 T5 3 turns did not really make much

of a difference at all. I did not push it past 3 turns.

360 cw. "The way to do this is to rotate the extension at the end of the pushrod in a clockwise fashion".

Re: Very very quick wastegate question... 850 1995

Don't do 180 degree turns that would only yield half turns. You need to do one complete revolution to do a complete turn on the rod so 360 degrees is the right way.
