Is the cigarette lighter (12 Volt plug illuminated at night? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

This might be a “duh” question, but I’ll risk my ego. I have had a 1999 XC since 1999 when I purchased it used. Unlike my 1996 850 wagon, it did not come equipped with a cigarette lighter. In contrast, ,y 1996 850 GLT wagon has a green colored plastic bezel around the plug opening that “lights up” at night when your turn on the headlights. Instead, my ‘99XC came with a plastic plug/cover that says “12 Volt”. I remember a car salesman told me the car did not come equipped with a cigarette lighter, but he would be happy to sell me one from the parts department (I declined because I’m a non-smoker). I guess Volvo was trying to encourage a healthier lifestyle, or maybe it was a recognition that customers wanted to used this outlet to power handheld accessories.

I noticed recently that this opening for this outlet on my ’99 XC is not illuminated at night (like my 850) when I turn the headlights on. It appears this outlet was never supposed to be illuminated at night. Can anyone confirm for me that I am right, that this outlet is not designed to be illuminated at night? Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh

I have a 2000 V70 and I am guessing 1999 is the same configuration. The socket is lighted all of the time including when lights are off. I have had to replace the bulb a couple of times. Not a quick job to replace bulb, since the center console must be unfastened and raised up to get to the bulb which mounts on side of socket.

At least it is not a Saab, Hugh, which at night you can turn off the whole panel lights, everything except for speedo. But the worst thing it is a huge button right above the radio that says "Night Light". It's ridiculous. The climate control comes on automatically when you start the car, and you can't turn that function off. You start the car, that fan is going to come on. It's the model's specific function. Mine is electrically stuck on full.
