I currently own a 2009 S40 (non-turbo model) and love its solid, sporty ride. It has been a wonderful daily driver -- very dependable, provides decent gas mileage, has a stylish "floating console" interior, and stands out in a parking lot. However, there are competitors in the same price range that are just as capable, and perhaps surpass the S40 in a few areas.
One concern is that the back seat is not nearly as roomy as in my previous 240 model. So please keep this in mind if you are moving from a 740 to the S40, and routinely need to transport several adults.
Some owners have complained of S40s "eating" rear brakes, but I have not personally experienced this issue. (Perhaps it is a mix of driving style, brake pad material, rotor material, etc.)
Although many basic S40 repairs can be done by a home mechanic, I feel that the 2004/2005 and later S40 models are not quite as DIY-friendly as older Volvos. The S40's multiple electronic control modules make it much more reliable, while at the same time make some issues much harder to troubleshoot. A few S40-specific forums exist, but most of the info is geared toward cosmetic and suspension upgrades.
Happy shopping!!!
