El Stupido Installs New Struts V70-XC70 2003

After 200+K miles I finally got around to replacing the front struts this past weekend with OEM Sachs units. Also new spring seats, strut bearings, boots/bump stops. What an improvement in ride quality!

As I was assembling the pieces on the bench I discovered I didn't have any new strut caps. "Darn, must have overlooked that when I ordered the parts!" The originals still looked very good so I reassembled with them rather than hold up the project for new ones. After I was done and was cleaning up after myself, I dug through the packing material and discovered a pair of new caps in the bottom of the box. "Why didn't I check the packing slip earlier?"

So my question..... If I wanted to swap in the new caps, as long as I have weight-on-wheels, couldn't I just unscrew the top nut and replace the cap? It appears the hole in the top of the inner fender is large enough to allow the old cap to be removed and the new one dropped in. Any harm in this?

You could unscrew the large nut, the star nut is actually holding the spring. But the old stuff is probably going to work just fine. Leave it.

The old ones appeared to look perfectly fine. I guess what I (world's biggest cheapskate) should admit to is that it kills me to look at two brand new caps sitting on the bench, knowing I paid real money for them. Maybe I'll just stick them on the shelf until the wife's S80 needs new struts and spring seats. Given the rough Texas roads, that won't be long.
