Timing belt - when do change it? V70-XC70 1998

My V70 has 132000 miles on it. When are we supposed to do a timing belt? The shop told us we have to do it in 7000 miles? is this accurate?

It's pretty straightforward, 70,000 miles or 7 years. You seem to be overdue on time, not the part to take a chance on as having it fail will cost big $$$. Don't know where you live, but if near a decent size city, there is probably an independent shop that is familiar with these cars. Look for Volvo only or European car place. As in previous post, good luck.

Almost all of the maintenance intervals are mileage or time.

If you think a bit, you can come up with some factors that apply to each.

For instance, an engine that has really low mileage could have a timing belt that has been sitting with part of it bent around the smallest pulley and has cracked as a result.

As Dirty Harry said - Do you feel lucky, punk?

I believe the timing belt interval in 98 was 70K mi or 7 years. Hence it would be due mileage wise at 140K. In years it would be overdue by a couple. In 99 they went from 70K interval to 105K interval.

Thank you. Which is more important to adhere to: mileage or years? We drive the car only 6 miles/day.

It is a false economy to wait to change the timing belt and tensioners. You can wind up with a bunch of bent valves and stranded somewhere inconvenient if the belt breaks.

Ok. Makes sense. So do we change it now due to age or wait another 7000 miles as the dealership recommended? I don't know which is more critical - age or mileage.

There is a sticker, or should be, pasted on the computer box in the engine bay. That sticker has date and miles of replacement. Back in the early days, dealers changed the Tbelt at 60K, just to be safe. And if that is the case, then you should get a new belt sooner rather than later.

Dealers aren't cheap, do you have a trusted indy? When doing belt replacement due to age, have a mechanic check the belt and see if it is cracked before shelling out $500-700.

Water pumps work for a very long time, so long as the coolant gets replaced with good quality coolant once in a while.

Driving 6 miles is the hardest thing you can make an engine do. It doesn't have a chance to warm up the oil and clean out the block oil passages. This is extreme driving conditions.
