I replaced my front struts....but? V70-XC70

Hi, I replaced the front struts on my 2000 V70 XC awd with all new parts, (IPD) but the bump stops, (forgot to order them, but the old ones weren't that bad). I also didn't have the tool for that 4 eared nut.
I put everything back in exactly how it came our, but when I bounce the car the strut top still bounces up and down slightly, (you can see with the hood open.
Is this normal? I would expect the top of the strut to stay put and it only bounce on it's telescoping ability. Is this just the bearing/bushing mount flexing? (I didn't use the HD mounts 'cause the rest of the car may only last another year or so, which is fine by me)
Thanks for the help
Chris

If it loosens up again, with car on the ground, take of top nut and plate and grind an impact socket to a 4 ear shape that fits the star nut. Hit it lightly with either yours or a pals impact gun. Got the tip from my local dealer, it's been quiet ever since.

I am not sure if a 3/8 socket will fit over the shock rod, but you are then talking about a really deep socket. Even if I had a donor socket, I wouldn't use an impact gun, a torque wrench at 52lbs would work nicely.

Both the star nut and top nut get torqued to 52 lbs. I have never figured how to get the star nut married to my torque wrench! Equally bad is holding the strut piston while torqueing the large top nut. There must be a tool designed for that somewhere...

Start the nut by hand. Take a 24" pipe wrench. Adjust it to fit the nut. Tighten. Use a spring scale if you must, but since the handle is 2 feet long only pull 26 pounds on the scale.

Didn't have a 24" pipe wrench, but I had one about 18"'s. So I tightened the nut until it just would go anymore and the rubber in the mount would start to twist then spring back....seems to have dome the trick.
Thanks everyone for the help and support on this board!

$25!! For an occasional use tool? And then you need a 1 inch offset bit that gets attached to the torque wrench (similar to the 7/8 tool to get the O2 sensors off/on).

To set my large nut and star nut, I use muscle memory. I loosen a lug nut, set the wrench to 51 lbs and tighten the nut, and then take a 3/8 socket to the nut and tighten it 1 mm. Then I take a wrench or pliers to the star nut and apply the same pressure, hoping that will do.

It is a little harder to do the large nut because I also have to hold the strut piston in place.

It sounds like the nut on top of the strut is still loose or the upper bearing/strut mount (whatever it is actually called) is bad.

Si, I guess I have to get that bearing/strut nut tightening tool, (socket) to tighten that 4 eared nut more?
thinking out loud...couldn't I drop on a grade 8 washer and a normal lock style nut in it's place?
