1987 Volvo 245 Losing Power Intermittently

A typical example: Humming along at 70. Suddenly, car starts to slow down. Floor it, and car continues to slow down. Cruising at about 40 for a minute or two, I figure I'm going to have to pull over as I am becoming a road hazard on the interstate. Car starts to speed up again. Cruise at 70 the rest of the way home. Did I mention this happened in the middle of the world's longest bridge to New Orleans from Mandeville?

This happened around the same time as some wiring troubles to the alternator D+. I have cleaned all the contacts, and my other charging problem is fixed, but this remains. Unfortunately, I replaced the alternator when I probably didn't need to, but wth, I have a new one.

Another issue I'm having that might be related is there is a minor amount of bypass escaping somewhere above the middle of the engine and hitting the hood above, but I haven't figured out where it's coming from yet.

Any ideas on any of this stuff? TIA

Sounds like a fuel problem. Fuel pump, clogged filter?
Possible one of the two relays (Fuel and RSR) acting up before outright quitting.
Relays often have erratic behavior before quitting and are some hard to track down when they start working again. Given the age of the relays and the mileage, it isn't a bad idea to change out the RSR and the fuel relays with NEW (not used).
Pick a mileage or age of the car and somewhere it becomes a good idea to change
them, Especially if you're going to keep the car and are interested in reliability. Check the posts for Fuel and RSR relays, which are proven troublemakers.

Fuel pump seems to be working. I replaced the filter as per your suggestion and added some fuel treatment. I thought the problem had gone away, but it came back last night. Cruising at 70 again for about 15 minutes. Power became sapped, and mph slowly decreased to about 50, at which point I pulled over. I didn't know what to do, so I got out, jiggled the wire from the battery to the injection, got back in, started up, got on on-ramp, and it happened again. Did the same thing. Started again, and got on the Interstate. No more problems for the rest of the 45 minutes of the trip. I guess next stop, relays.

Long after we sold our 1982 240 because of the same problem (that nobody including the dealer could solve) I learned that the 240's have a 25 amp fuse located on the side of the engine compartment that powers the fuel system and it is known for becoming corroded and causing problems like this. I can't remember which side of the engine bay it's on, but it can't be too hard to find.

Yeah, that was causing a problem. I replaced the fuse and the holder, spliced it in-line. Also, there is a big plug with several wires at the firewall that had become corroded. I just removed that, cleaned the wire contacts, and plugged them in individually, wrapping them in electrical tape. Maybe the insulation on the wire is wearing out, or the metal inside is corroding at some point?
