Door lock doesn't function in hot weather V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 SE B5244S Denso AW5 205K miles

Have searched the site for this particular issue: In cooler weather, the remote keyless entry locks and unlocks all five doors as it should.

When it's hot outside and/or when the car is in direct sunlight, the remote will not unlock or lock the driver's door and it must be opened with the key. All of the other doors will lock/unlock. The same symptoms occur when the locking system is cycled in short order, even in cool weather: no driver's door locking.

Is this a typical early symptom of door lock failure?

Do I have the solution for you as I just fixed this problem on my wifes 1998 V70.

The thermistor in each lock has gone bad and needs to be replaced with a chunk of copper wire. I used 10 Gauge and now they all work fine.

There is video out there that discusses how to fix this problem.

Here it is:

Enjoy!

If the thermistor functions as a fuse, better find new thermistors.

So funny you should mention this and I thought about adding it in my original post.

I did some research on this and found out that Volvo had an issue in the 240, 740, and 940 door lock relay's sticking and burning out the motors. Thus in the 850, S70, V70 etc, they not only redesigned the relay but added the thermistor to the door lock mechanism.

The only problem with the thermistor is over time the material that makes it up breaks down thus causing this issue.

The redesigned relay however has not, I repeat, has not failed, thus they fixed the real issue, but introduced a new bug.

My fix cost me only time and works like a charm. The alternative to paying FCPGroton over $600.00 for all new door locks. Not gonna happen.

Matt

This is very informative -- the issue and fix is probably not that well known about.

I have an extra lock around (front passenger door, failed REPL) that I can swap out the motor, if the motors are interchangeable. True, the swapped motor may eventually have the same thermistor problem and then again, maybe not.

Thank you!

You are quite welcome!

The motors are interchangeable.

When I did this I first tested the motor with a 12 volt source to make sure it worked, then performed the fix and tested after to make sure it still worked.

Wanted to make sure it worked before I sealed it back in the plastic housing.

Its nice to see all door locks go up and down together like when it was new.

A great feeling of accomplishment.

Enjoy!

Try chilling the Fob in the freezer for thirty minutes. See if the problem
is there.
