rear bumper V70-XC70 1998

I bought a '98 XC a few months ago...the rear bumper is separated from the rear quarter panel and rear hatch by about 1/2 inch. The separation is uniform and the bumper is solid...this leads me to believe that it is supposed to be like that, but I just want to make sure...
