Gas tank capacity S40-V40 2001

I've had my S40 for about 2 weeks now - long enough for a couple of fill-ups. The owners manual says the gas tank holds 16 gallons but the most I've been able to put in is 11 gallons, which says to me that it's probably a 12 gallon tank. Is it a misprint in the manual or is there something going on with the tank or maybe the sending unit?

Any information would greatly appreciated before I give a call to the dealer.

    The tank in an S40 is 60 litres (16.2 US gallons). When I refill it takes about 50 litres (13.5 US gallons), but I have had the trip computer (my '98 still has the digital type) shout 'FUEL' at me and it then needed 57 litres (15.4 US gallons).

    The last 15 litres or so in the tank are not directly measured anymore though, but the system estimates the amount left from the fuel consumption over a little while. The shape of the tank does not allow the normal float to reach 'down' far enough to give a direct reading.

    If you step on it with not much fuel left in the tank it will start flashing the fuel warning sooner as it 'sees' the fuel consumption go up and the 'miles to 0' goes down sharply..

    Rob,

    I was the first to bring up this issue (at least I think I was) i've had mine for almost 7 months now and i've tried every trick I've been told and still have yet to put anything above 13 gallons in the S40. Check out my site www.classiccats.cc/s40project.html, I put something in there about the fuel tank along with people's responses and pictures of the tank.

      Thanks to all who replied. I haven't run the tank down until the light came on - in Washington,DC traffic it isn't wise to anger the gas gods or they'll let you run out in the middle of a 5 mile backup. Anyway, it was just a little oddity and maybe sometime I'll run it all the way down and see what happens.

      Either you get another type of fuel tank in the US, or you guys are just not running the car until it's completely empty.

      When the warning light turns on there should be just about enough fuel for a 50km ride left in the tank.

    I've had my V40 T4 for half a year, and I can assure you the tank holds more than 11 gallons. With about 18 miles left to go before empty (according to the trip computer) i put in just above 14 gallons. As my fuel consumption is normaly at around 23.5mpg it should take at least another gallon before full. The warning light goes on when there is about 30-35 miles left to go until the tank is empty. I think this is specified in your manual if you look for it.

    Rob,

    The gas light on the x40 goes on real early. I can always drive quite far after it goes on. The most I've put in is 13 gal. Your manual is correct though.
