How to power accessory port, with ignition off? S70 1998

By design, the ports are unpowered with ignition off.

I suppose I could run wires from the battery terminals, with an inline fuse holder. But is there an easier way, by modifying the existing wiring?

Also, I would like to know the devices that fuses 37 through 40 are associated with. These are larger, silver-colored, rectangular box-type fuses. The panel identifies only fuses 1 through 36, and says see Owner Manual (which I cannot find) for 37 through 40.

Thanks in advance.

How to power accessory port, with ignition off? S70 1998

I found my Owner's Manual, and while randomly reading various sections, I found the answer: The auxiliary sockets, like the radio, are POWERED in key position I (III is start, II is run). Just never occurred to me.

And now for "fuses" 37-40, the large silver-colored ones. These are actually automatic circuit breakers, and do not normally need to be replaced:

37 Power windows, power sun roof
    38 Not used
    39 Power seat (driver's side)
    40 Power seat (passenger's side)

Be careful leaving the key in pos I as the ECC unit is also powered - cabin blower will run your battery down quickly.

I wish I had an easy answer, like run a wire from fuse X to the acc port and cap off the current wire.

I plan to run a small fan which uses less than 5 watts ...

You say the ECC is powered in position I; will the ECC overheat (detrimentally) if powered for 6 hours with no cooling, at say 75 degrees ambient temperature?

No harm done to the ECC unit, but make sure the fan is off (it should be in pos I).

5 watts is a large draw for 6 hours. How about a solar panel on the dash to power a small fan? Much cheaper and you can probably put it under the passenger seat while driving. Look at EBAY for dash panels.

Most of the interior bulbs are 5W, as are the rear taillights and parking lights. 6 hours with a 5W bulb on will tax your battery, especially with a short commute.

The easiest part of the dashboard to access is behind the radio head unit. While I'm at work an the schematics are at home, the head unit wiring harness has an always-on memory wire that could be tapped into, IMHO.

It's fused, so that part of the job is already done.

If you have an automatic tranny, there is a thin metal plate that covers the firewall hole where the clutch pedal would normally go, near the brake pedal. That's an easy spot to drill a hole through.

I guess I have to ask what you intend to power to guess how much current it will draw.

I am looking to power an air pump which draws approx 1.0 Amp.

Not quite following you though, as far as need to drill through panel in accelerator area, if I would be tieing into wiring behind the radio.

I goofed and didn't explain myself clearly. The plate for the clutch pedal is the easiest location to drill through the firewall and run a line out to the battery terminal (with an in-line fuse).

On my car, since I have an automatic tranny, the clutch-pedal cover plate is how I brought in 4GA wires into the cabin between the battery and a stereo amp.

You would have to review the fuse block wiring to see what the stereo memory line is rated for.
