Recommendations for FWD axles....car has ~300k miles

I'm coming up on 300k miles and need the passenger side replaced. I figure I should do both, it's just a matter of time. Do you agree?

I can go the salvage route at $65 apiece but these have 87k miles. Seems like a lot of miles for a salvage part that might have been driven hard. Maybe not. I'm not sure.

What experience do you have with driveshafts?

300K - thats awesome!

I am sure the car has been well maintained and you have some life left in it, but all things equal I'd probably go "used". Unless its an axle from a car that was tuned and driven hard I don't think there is too much to worry about. Then again if aftermarket OEM units are around the same price you may consider those.

Doing the work yourself?

Bought salvage axles from Erie. Mechanic did both sides in less than an hour. Would have taken me most of the day with floor jack, stands and hand tools. The axles arrived carefully packed, in about two days. They were clean as if someone inspected them. Mechanic said they looked "new". The difference was dramatic. Smooth cruising 100+ mph. Less slack in take off. Reused axle bolt spacers. If you change axles use the xc60 spacer axle bolts. No "ping".

Erie usually does a very good job.

I appreciate your zeal while testing the new running gear, but most states have a 'go directly to jail' law if caught going over 100mph. Be careful out there...

My email editor typed MPH, when it should be KPH.

I like to do my own work, I think I could do axles, but have jack stands and a floor jack.

I'm thinking of "delegating" it....my mechanic has a lift. Probably take him less than an hour for both sides.

I ordered salvaged axles from Erie. I've never been disappointed with anything bought there. Aftermarket is tempting. The price is ridiculous compared to OE. But sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Especially original Volvo stuff. Erie has a lifetime warranty, they said just keep the receipt.

I'm waiting for someone to tell me to stay away from Chinese stuff. And I like FCP a lot, but I've learned to look for OE. Sometimes the price difference is negligible. That's why it's nice to drive old cars.

Hi, I have had very good results from both EMPi,this has been on 1 side for about 1 1/2 years and also A1 cardone which has been on the other side for about 5 months. Both were very inexpensive and seem very well made. Jnstall was a snap too. Rock Auto has very good pricing on these as does Amazon.

I would just put in the FCP Groton axles, new Chinese ones. I have used them on three different FWD Volvos and not had a problem.
