transmission wearing out?? V70-XC70 1998

I have a 98 V70 2.4 NA with autobox. I have now completed 165,000 miles but in the past few hundred miles, it feels like the 1st gear clutch pack may be slipping as it takes a second to engage forward motion from a coplete stop. No codes tripped, no flashing arrow. Fluid is full and does not smell burnt or look bad. I last flushed it about 120,000.

Is this a common beginning to transmission failure for this model or do you guys think it is something else failing.

John,

Your tranny requires 3309 ATF. I assume the two links:

are for those 'older' 4 speed automatics that specify Dex/Merc. Never confuse the two!

do and R&R with M1 ATF and I suspect you be so happy that you'll make a donation to Brickboard. and while you are under the hood, put in an inline Magnafine filter! These trannies have no filtration.

thanks for the input everyone.

I have been reluctant to flush since this started as in some autoboxes where the clutch packs and bands are really worn, the "dirty" fluid helps the friction surfaces grab where "slick" new fluid aggrivates the "slip".

I dont and have never power flushed. i just use the transmissions's own pump and copius amounts of fluid to flush it with the cooler lines.

I may add a an in line filter as I know there is not a factory one.

According to the website 'MagneFine requires insertion into the return cooler line'. Just looking at the photos right now it seems easy enough, requiring a new piece of 5/16th / 8mm hose (internal diameter of the hose or external I have no idea yet) and a couple of hose clips.

In fact, I just looked around and there is a place in Auckland,(Auckland Transparts LTD) and I can get a similar in-line filter for $30 NZ which is $23 US, as a trade price to me after my enquiry.

I will do that. I wonder though how it will pan out, whether it will show it's worth, due to the car's age.

There is only one pressure pump and it will get weak. The best thing to do is flush the tranny again, it is time, but do not use a high pressure machine.

Mine did that at 175K, but only when it was very cold.

No, normally these trannies are bulletproof IF they have been maintained properly.

I'd scan it for tranny codes, if nothing, then flush it again. Use the cheapest ATF you can find to flush it then refill with synthetic ATF.

You could also try an AutoRX tranny treatment or Lucas tranny treatment.

The easiest thing is replace the tarns oil first once more.

I like the Valvoline High Mileage in the red bottle.
