The instrument panel lights, odometer, tach, fuel gauge, water temperature, message center all went out today. The car is a 2002 Ocean Race XC70 with 177K. I have checked fuses and found no blown fuses. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how do I fix it?

I took the car to Southern Electronics, http://www.southernelectronics.com
yesterday. In 20 minutes, it was good to go. It costs about $600 including cluster repair, Volvo dealer and gas. If I had let the dealer "fix" the cluster it would have cost about $1500. I highly recommend Southern Electronics in Richmond, VA

Got the DIM back Friday. It still does not work properly. I am looking at my options. New, rebuilt or junkyard.

Rebuilt cluster was reinstalled and works fine. The "SRS-AIRBAG Service Urgent" message is now on. Is there anyway to get around taking it to the dealer to reset the message?

Took it to dealer to have reprogrammed. Dealer advised that the DIM is bad and needs to be replaced. $1460. I plan on removing the DIM and sending it back to the rebuild facility.

"Also, don't turn the key on while there is no DIM in the car. That will set the SRS fault light which only the dealer or someone with Vida/dice can clear. Disconnecting the battery prior to removing the DIM, and not reconnecting it until another DIM is in place is probably safer yet."
Actually, the battery should have been disconnected.
Is the SRS light in the dash also on? It should turn off after it does its system checks. If the SRS light turns off, then the fault is in the DIM according to others on the web.
VIDA/DICE scanner to diagnose and turn off.

I found out about this website: http://www.instrumentclusters.com
They will rebuild the instrument cluster and warrantee it for 12 months for $300. I am going to go with them. Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Probably the DIM computer. It controls the instrument panel.
I would send mine (I don't have that modern gizmo) to www.xemodex.com for a refurbish, or :
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=42487
The dealer is a total rip.

Leon,
If you end up trying to replace the DIM itself, beware that they are "keyed" to the car with an internal code. So when you go shopping for a used one you need to give the seller the year of your car and give them the numbers that are printed on the back of the DIM. A good Volvo recycler will be hep to how to match the code numbers. If they simply want to send you whatever DIM they have on hand, the chances of it working are slim at best.
Also, don't turn the key on while there is no DIM in the car. That will set the SRS fault light which only the dealer or someone with Vida/dice can clear. Disconnecting the battery prior to removing the DIM, and not reconnecting it until another DIM is in place is probably safer yet.

Chris,
Thank you. Do you know any one the Charlotte area that carries one?

I got one a couple years ago from these people in Tennessee:
http://southernvovo.com/
I think I paid about $120 at the time. It came with some nominal warranty like 12 months, but it's still working well. It's a crap shoot as to whether they have one with the correct code at the time you need it. Have your old one in hand when you call them and he'll tell you what numbers he needs off of it.
