'98 XC70 DRIVESHAFT QUESTIONS V70-XC70 1998

I had my driveshaft removed when the center bearing became noisy. But, didn't want to pay the $900 for a rebuilt unit.

1) Has anyone taken their driveshaft to a driveshaft shop and had the center bearing replaced?

2) Why my driveshaft was off the car, one of the CV joints on the end came apart.
Is there a trick to getting it back together? (I tried for an hour, and failed!)

Thanks,

Bill

am I understanding that you can remove the shaft from front to rear and replace the center bearing at a driveshaft shop? Why is it not possible to have them replace the cv also? how does the cv assembly unbolt from tranny? quickly?

I had a cousin who had an 98 awd and needed the shaft, had problems getting it, junked car. Cab I assume a driveshaft specialist could do the rebuild and install reasonably? And could one drive in the 2wd mode with the driveshaft off as a DD until can find a install on the rear shaft? Thank!

Answer to #1 after doing a search on 'center bearing':

Driveshaft center bearing- Lesson #1
The support bearing on the driveshaft assembly started making noise at 75k miles. Now, I replaced the bearing on the drive shaft earlier for $43 by taking the drive shaft assembly to a driveline shop. They replaced the bearing. Volvo wanted $1700 for the driveshaft assembly new or I was quoted $800 for a remanufactured assembly.

Remember to mark with paint the proper connecting parts of the shaft. You don't want to be off by 90 or 180 degrees and have severe vibration.

_____________
#2 what came apart? The front CV joint and boot? Or a rear CV joint?

I had the exact experience. And, I can't get the CV joint back together either!

It came apart by itself, so it should go back together. But, I can't find the trick.

I did receive a quote from Colorado Drive Shaft (Denver) to replace the center u-joint and carrier bushing for $285.
