Rear brakes-electric parking brake and pad change V70-XC70 2009

When I put the snows on last weekend I checked the pads. Fronts ok, rears not so good. Bought a set of pads and took one of the carriers out. How in the world do you collapse the piston to make room for new pads? The piston didn't seem to push in the way I am used to. Ok, so a caliper that has a built in parking brake should screw back in. A tenative attempt to turn the piston didn't do anything either. Not having broken anything yet, I put it back together. How should I go about getting the piston to retract?

The only time I changed pads with the new fangled pistons was on my wife's 2001 Audi. I bought a tool specifically designed to compress and turn the caliper at the same time. The caliper piston had two dimples to receive the tool. You cannot push the pston in the old fashion way, nor will just turning do anything for you, the new tool is required.

There should be youtube demos for newer cars, not just Volvos.

No such luck, Klaus. The new electrically applied parking brakes are not like the old screw piston brakes. Not just on Volvos, but on lots of other cars now too. VW, Jag, Merc and probably Audi and others. The dealer tool will unlock or retract or something the piston. It can not be done mechanically. Google Volvo EPB to find a tool for about $100.
I just had words with my local dealer's service department. Serves me right for talking to the wrong guy again. I'm afraid I lost my cool and told him that I had been doing business there since 1970, and unless he took the stick out of his ass I wouldn't be back. He hung up, so I guess he doesn't care. Oh well. Further research tells me that expected pad life for EPBs is between 18 and 30 thousand miles. I have 45 on the car, so I guess I've beaten the odds on that one. Bite the bullet and buy the tool. Do the job once myself and I'll come out ahead of having it done at the dealer anyway. Too bad, it used to be a great place to do business with nice people.

I wonder if the ELM327 with a notebook would be able to access the EPB commands.

Very nice. Now if the solar heater in my "garage" would just turn on...
