Fading Silver /Pewter Color 850 1996

I've read a lot about the roof strips coming off and how to deal with that issue. Seems dumb to have put them on in the first place. I've seen many cars (my last Mazda) that have nice looking, no maintenance channels. So why are the roof strips there on the 850? Anyway, I have the silver/pewter color and the paint is fading on the roof. Not noticeable until you look close or in flourescent light. Does anyone else have the same problem? How do you treat this color and prevent fading, keep it in the garage out of the sun?

    Rollo,

In my 95 wagon, the channels under those strips are for installing the roof rack. There are 3 screw holes in each side of the channel to secure the roof rack. I don't know the reason of the strip in sedan.

So far, I haven't noticed any paint fading on the roof of my 95 wagon (Pewter Silver). Could it be that I wax my car quite often ?

      Ching-ho,

I think the problem relates to the type of paint and the mix that the application used. Silver is a problem on many cans, as are most metalic colors. I recently sold a silver 1990 Mazda 626 to get the Volvo, it had no problems with fading. My issue is that a Volvo should have excelleent paint that lasts and retains it's color and uniformity, not average paint that fades and dulls. I have had this car a few months and have applied several coats of NuFinish polish. This is good stuff that protects the paint, but is not helping the top of the 850. My 850 is also garaged most of the time when home. BTW my roof strips are in fine shape. Interestingly enough my '87 240DL is a light silver/green metalic color and is the original paint. It has no problems either.

        Rollo,

        Toss out the NuFinish.

Go to the site below. Lots of good information and advice.

I think the roof strips cover a point where body welds are done.

    The strip trims it out.

The S60 is quite a bit cleaner in the way they handled this.
