2000 V70 XC AWD SEmimicking ETM failure after radiator replacement V70-XC70

2000 V70 XC AWD SE So here's the story and I really need help! So my Husband replaced my radiator the other day and the two major hoses that go with it while he was in there. My car is now mimicking what has said to be an ETM failure. It Sputters badly when started and while driving, car stalls mostly when accelerating from stop light or stop signs, lights dim and flicker and RPMs drop rapidly. This was NOT and issue before the radiator replacement and the is no CEL to be read. My Husband is military and had to leave in the middle of this (not his fault, duty calls) leaving me and my two kids without a reliable vehicle. Most of the issues happen when car is cold; but, is not limited to just that time. I was told it may be a grounding or vacuum issue, no vacuum leaks have been found at this time. I know it is common for ETM failure mimicking if there is a grounding issue. Where is the grounding wire near the radiator? Pics please, I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any other suggestions or thoughts are welcome. I fear taking it to the dealership and it be such a small issues, by the time they find it I will have spent more in labor than the car is worth.

You probably won't see this, but - my dealer is offering free diagnosis (up to 1 hour) and a written report of what is ailing your car.

If you have another problem, you might check with your dealer.

Is the ETS light on? XeModex has a good diagnostic .pdf for dealing with presumed ETM failures-- I think it is on their website and may have been reposted here or on Matthew's Volvo site. As you point out, there are other things that mimic ETM failure that should be ruled out before replacement.

I think your best bet is a two stage approach:

    1) the ETM isn't far away from the radiator, which is the last place work took place. Look for poorly seated connectors, disconnected vacuum lines, etc. in the vicinity (I would look in a forearm's length radius around the radiator). If this comes up clean:

    2) you need to have the car scanned for codes by someone with a system to read Volvo codes. My preference would be an independent Volvo specialty shop-- these guys deal with people who can't afford/prefer not to pay for dealer service, but still know their stuff.

    Good luck!

Thank you so much for your insight on my issue. I forgot to remove this post, as it has been a hectic few days. On Saturday I disconnected the battery to the car, unplugged and re-plugged every circuit and wire connection I could see and physically reach, and disconnected and reconnected every hose in and around the radiator. I also had to remove the passenger headlight assembly to find the ground wire I was looking for, and it was fine. I put everything back together and reconnected the battery....Started up the car and VIOLA! Car was back to normal; drove great like nothing had ever happened. I have been using it the last two days without anymore issues. I have no clue what exactly it was; but, let's hope it stays this way. Stalling out in an intersection multiple times with a 2 year old and 4 year old in the car is SCARY!
