Noisy Oil Cooler Thermostat 850 1996

Though it was pulleys but no....

Well it turns out this part is no longer available.
Junk yards don't even want to deal with it.

Can I remove and GUT the unit and reinstall?

Just very noisy on cold start then quiet downs after couple minutes.
Very apparent from cabin when driving off

Rob

The oil cooler thermostat is just a spring to open the passage for the oil to flow. A pick&pull should have them on all turbos through 2000. Carry a folding torx wrench with you. T40? I might have used a 1/4" ratchet with a 6" extension to get the screw off the front. Be careful of the gasket that goes around the back side of the housing, don't loose it.

The oil lines have a small gasket at the base, these must be placed on the line and then inserted into the base with very little force, if any.

I have NEVER heard a noisy one before. You are the FIRST!

Wow, never heard of that problem before (pun intended).

I had mine off when I changed the oil cooler lines, but don't remember if it could be taken apart. My suspicion is that it can't, or at least not easily. I think I would have noted that.

Anyway, as Klaus stated, there are many in the boneyards. It is kind of a pain to remove it though.

          That didn't solve the issue.
Still have this cold start growling noise. Goes away after couple of minutes.

I took serp belt off...Noise remains...so nothing involved in the belt circuit.

Next guesses are water pump and TBelt pulleys.

What about the oil pump? Do these go bad...I guess so why would they sell them.
Would bad O ring pick up tube rings cause this? Created sucked in air into oil feed creating noise in pump. As oil heats the oil flows easier with less air mixed into feed?

BTW, the oil T stat was easy to change. Need 1/4 drive with extensions and univ swevel to get at tube plate screw. Also need to stick the rubber gasket to T stat with sealant so it doesn't fall off or shift when mount to engine.
Don't need to remove oil tube bracket on frame. Attach tube to T stat prior to mounting T stat to engine.

If air gets sucked into the oil pump, shouldn't the oil pressure drop enough to turn on the light?

Don't forget to check the oil filter, there is a small butterfly valve inside that can get stuck - happened to one Brickboarder a long time ago and it was a Mann filter!
