Oil Smell 850 1993

Have recently noticed oil smell coming into the cabin through vent system. Especially bad while car is idling. No leaks that I can see. Bit of oil seapage/misting around oil filler spot, suspect gasket there, but the smell is not coming from this. Any ideas or comments would be helpful.

Thanks

Murray

    Re: Oil Smell 850 1993

Had two things that were contributing to my problem (oil smell). My 1993 had a broken fitting in the flame trap system. It is just below the intake manifold. Cracked rubber fitting caused misting oil throughout the engine area.

Also, my camshaft seal was leaking behind the top motor mount bracket. Oil was slowly seeping behind the bracket to the exhaust manifold. Took a mirror against the firewall and looked toward rear of engine. After several hours (over many days) found a small leak.

    Good luck!!

    Murray,

I had a similar problem when I bought my 96 850. I could smell fumes in the cabin when idling, but could not find any leaks at all. Sort of smelled like a combination of exhaust and oil. I did notice a slight vapor coming from the distributor side of the engine and the same smell. Turned out to be a combination of loose hose clamps/split hose ends around the flame trap and throttle body area. This solved the problem for me completely.

    Good Luck!
