Dual Mass Flywheel? S70 1998

Is there any advantages/disadvantages with using a dual mass flywheel? The clutch on my s70 is going out and needs replacement. I'm taking the car in Monday night so anyone who can help as soon as possible thanks.

DG

If Volvo doesn't make it (and they don't), I wouldn't consider it as it's not needed with your car. Most FWD Volvos are still on their original clutches (yes, turbo cars too) so it's obvious to me that the original parts are more than good enough for your car. The turbo FWDs are not THAT powerfull where they need HP, aftermarket parts to keep things from blowing so save your money.

In 1990, the infamous dual-mass flywheel was introduced on the Porsche 911 C2/C4 series. The flywheels were intended to help reduce low-speed gear noise however they have proven to be problematic on these cars.

How many miles do you have on your S70?

(Oh, jeez now something ELSE to worry about!)

Re: Dual Mass Flywheel? S70 1998

I have around 52k on my car. I had posted a message on volvospy awhile back and a guy name Ben? who said he was a volvo tech told me that i should install a dual mass flywheel. now that i have been reading around on the net and the previous response, i am not to sure that i want to have this installed. He also told me that volvo did not put in a clutch capable of handling the torque that the T5 engine can apply. Any thoughts on what i should do next? My dealer is going to install the biggest springs they can on the new clutch but are currently unsure weather it will be a single or dual mass. I made an inquiry about it while i was setting up an appointment and they said they would look into it. so now i'm sorta hoping that the dual mass is not available for my car. does anyone know if volvo manufactures a dual mass clutch? i don't know if they do, but i hope they don't at this point.

FWIW, I havn't heard of many fried clutches here. A few early failures, when the cars were young, and that's about it.

        Now you have me worried.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Of all the problems i have heard about the S70, the only one i have had is with the light bulbs. everything works seemlessly. BTW, my S70 T5M was manufactured in January of 1997. I consider my car to be proven 850 technology. Later in the 1998 model year some various changes were made with engine perameters and other various control systems. So just because it was the first year for the model dosen't always mean it was bad.
