Blowing coolant when hot V70-XC70

My "new" 1999 V70 is blowing coolant out of the expansion tank after a drive. I had filled it up to about 3/4's the way between the min/max level and went for about half an hour drive then when I parked it blew coolant. The temp gauge read just above half way so not reading in the hot zone. I am thinking a bad thermostat or perhaps the fan not coming on. When I got home it was too late to check the fan as I had a lot to do and was late enough already.
Am I on the right track with those two thoughts? (Thermostat or fan) or is there something else I should be looking at?
It runs fine other than this issue, especially considering the 217K on it.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Do you see a stream of bubbles .... V70-XC70

One other consideration. When the coolant is being ejected, can you see a stream of bubbles coming into the overflow tank from the radiator hoses?

If so, that may mean a head gasket leak, one that shows when the engine block/head is at operating temperature.

Good luck.

I'll have to look for that. I haven't noticed but I wasn't looking for it either. The expansion tank cap is cracked on each side and judging from the junk in the cracks has been for awhile. I haven't seen any other signs that say head gasket issues, so hopefully not.

Get a new cap at your local dealer, it is not expensive.

As for the door panel inserts, Volvo was using 'green' glue and cheap vinyl that shrunk in the heat. The only reasonable fix is to remove all 4 panels, cut out the insert and have a local shop replace the vinyl using real glue.

Make sure the expansion tank cap isn't cracked. They sometimes fail and then leak. If the temp gauge is reading fine, I'm guessing the cap is cracked. I'd start there and then move on to checking the cooling fan.

Thank you Nate! I looked earlier today and yes it is. For now I JB Welded it, hopefully that holds until I can source a new/good cap. Now can someone tell me why S70/V70 interior door panels are shit?
Thanks,
Chris
