LCD Lights on clock and odometer 850 97

The night light on my clock and odometer's liquid crystal display went out suddenly last week. I am sure my dealer will want $500 to replace them. Does anyone know if it is reasonably easy to access the rear of the instrument panel so that I can pull out the lcd display and replace the lights or find the short? Are there any manuals on the www which would diagram this process.

Thanks for your help

Just a little piece of information..... My clock and computer light went out as well about 2 years ago. I replaced them (along with all the other lights, speedo, tach, etc...) with Track Auto lights and they haven't burnt out yet. The cost of the lights from the dealer prompted me to do this. Also don't let the dealer try to tell you that Track Auto lights won't work because of voltage, it's simply not true. They work perfectly fine in my car, and you can't tell the difference from the other factory lights (the factory ones actually remaining that is). Also here is a web site that will walk you through the process of removing the dash to replace those lights... Good luck....

Tom, give it a good, but mild, whack. 850 97

... Right on the sill of the guages. I did after I noticed the exact same light go out (the left light of the two that illuminate the time etc lcd).

And it came back on. Went out again but the method is repeatable. If both your lights went out at the same time, this may not work since the cause is probably somehting different.

    Tom,

I experience the same problem a couple years back. Fortunately, I was able to convince the dealer to replace the light without cost due to another unrelated warranty issue which was under negotiation. I did however see how it was replaced. Access to the light requires that the dash be removed to get to the instrument panel. They can do this pretty quick - figure no more than 2 hours labor.

Speaking of lights, be prepared for the light that illimunates the gear shift panel on your floorboard console to go out soon. It's happened twice for me. I replaced it myself the last time and it's not too complicated.

    Good luck.
