Method to reset SERVICE LIGHT V70-XC70 99

In case anyone is looking for this, here is the method that worked for me to reset the SERVICE LIGHT in the dash. From other posts, I had been under the impression that only the dealer could do this or that you needed fancy (read expensive) tools but I found this searching the net.

This worked for me and I believe will work on all late S/V/C 70s.

1) Push and hold the trip meter reset button (the one next to the odometer - not the trip computer one)

2) While holding down the reset button, turn the ignition switch to position I and then position II

3) After about 5 seconds, the SER-VICE light will begin to flash

6) After the second flash (or more likely after at least 2 flashes), release the reset button

7) Turn off the ignition and then start the S/V70 normally and the SER-VICE light should be reset (back to normal).

Hope this helps,

Mike

p.s. if anybody cares or is curious I found this on a posting in alt.autos.volvo by Cameron Price

I think the dealer resets it some other way...(trivia) V70-XC70 99

We bought our '99 V70 as an ex-service-loaner with 3000 miles on it. As part of the deal they changed the oil and (evidently) reset the service light.

Being an anal-retentive sort regarding car maintenance I decided to go to a 3,750 interval on oil changes so I did the next change myself at ~7000 miles and reset the light per the above procedure, even though the reminder light hadn't started coming on yet. The light flashed and all as advertised and the light didn't come on at 7,500 miles, so I thought it was successful.

But...the reminder light came on at ~10,500! I then reset it again, and this time it went off.

Subsequent experimentation has led me to the conclusion that this above procedure resets the light *if the light has started to come on* but not otherwise; i.e. at intervals of ~7,500 miles only.

But since it is clear that my dealer successfully reset the light at 3,000 miles, it is apparent that the way they do it can and does reset the light at *any mileage*.

Thought you might be interested in this trivia....

Mike:

Man I was so exicted when I read this since I do my own oil changes and my service light is now on after purchasing my brick a couple of months ago.

I did as instructed but my ser-vice light never flashed and didn't reset.

Doesn't work on 98 models. Only 99 and later. Sorry.

That would explain it - it worked right away on mine but I was wondering why it wouldn't on yours. Hopefully some other solution will come up.

Sorry,

Mike

Re: Method to reset SERVICE LIGHT V70-XC70 98

The SERVICE light comes on after it has covered the specified number of miles following the last reset. If your interval is 7,500 miles, it would only come on at 50,000 miles if it was last reset at 42,500 miles.
