Hum From Radio/Climate Control Console V70-XC70 2001

When I open the drivers door, a hum noise starts, loud enough to be distracting with the radio on. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the door was locked or unlocked, radio on or off, auto climate or a/c on or off, fan on or off. The buzz seems to come from the climate control part of the console area. Some times it goes off after a few minutes, sometimes stays on longer. It does go off several minutes after leaving the car, door locks on or off.

My long time service advisor, who I respect and is preping a press car currently, doesn't know what it is. Any thoughts on what this might be and how to control it would be appreciated.

This is the only annoyance with the car in 5500 miles.

Thanks, Whit

Re: Hum From Radio/Climate Control Console V70-XC70 2001

In the climate control panel is an in car temp sensor. It is behind the small oppening in the face of the climate panel. This sensor has a motorized fan to pull air accross the sensing element. I'm not positive but I believe the fan starts and the sensor becomes active upon unlocking and/or opening the door, to tell the ECU what to expect at engine start and to configure the climate system for the existing conditions. Have seen several of these in the past few weeks with a noisy fan motor. It will take a trip to the dealer to correct. The sensor will need to be replaced.
