power antenna repair/replace? 850 1994

Hi Group:

The power antenna on our '94 850 Turbo (sedan) is stuck in the fully-extended position. The motor can be heard running, so I'm guessing the internal cable or gearing (whichever it may have) may be damaged. I will have time to take a look at it later today, but before I do, anyone have any advice on the possible repair of this unit? BTW, the mast is arrow-straight and well-lubricated. Does Volvo sell parts or do I have to buy the whole thing if I can't get it working? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Dean,

If your antenna motor is running then all you need to buy is the antenna mast. The dealer sell it for about $30 (1.5 year ago) as Volvo Part number # 9494389-1.

What has happened is that the nylon/plastic internal line which reels thru the motor has broken.

Go to www.volcospeed.com and BAY 13 where excellent illustrated instructions are provided under "850 S/V/C 70 Antenna Mast Replacement".

I have done the job- its not difficult- just require a bit of patience, especially if you must take the motor housing apart to clean out the broken off portion of the nylon cable.

You can do it- what do you have to lose? Unless of course you are still under warranty in which case have the dealer do it for you.

How long did it take to remove the broken cable from the motor housing? Is it worth the time and effort? Where did you get the instructions on taking apart the housing?

      Thanks

Whole job took 45 minutes for me.

Again, go to Bay 13 for instructions.

Thanks Nathan, for the part number and the Volvospeed web instructions. I found the part at for about $13. This will be my first order with them, so I can't speak from experience, but the prices shown for all the parts I checked were 50 - 60% less (sometimes even cheaper than that) than at the Volvo dealer here in Tampa, with free UPS on orders over $50.

For whatever reason the web page URL I tried to post in my last message didn't print. So, here it is again: http://www.alloemvolvoparts.com

I've got no financial interest, just happened to stumble onto their site, and the prices looked very good.
