Whining noise when I hit wet snow at speed V70-XC70 2001

So last night I drove from Western MA to Stowe VT in a pretty nasty storm (worth it for today’s powder!). But, the weirdest thing happened. At 55-60mph, if I moved into the left lane to pass and it had a few inches of heavy wet snow, a loud whining noise would come from the front end for a few seconds. It didn't always happen, but happened 4 times or so. When it first happened to me, it sounded like electrical interference from my stereo, such as when a stereo is not grounded properly and the engine revs cause whining through the system. But when I shut off the stereo I realized where it was coming from. I've driven all winter in several really bad storms and this has never happened. Even weirder, when I got to my friends house who has a duplicate of my car, he said it just happened to him for the first time last night too!!! He lives up there and it's been one of the snowiest winters, but it didn't hit him until last night. I have 7600 miles on the car. We are both totally perplexed.

    Chase,

Here's a guess for you, could the noise be the traction control? I think that model has the "TRACS" for slow speed, but the STC is a electronic rev limiter. I think this is to reduce the torque and give beter traction. Could both of you hit an area that caused this STC to kick in long enough to notice a change in engine noise?

    Well, it's a guess.

Yea, that was actually my first thought. Since it would happen when I switched from a lane with little snow to a lane with a lot, I figured that the wheel that hit the snow first might activate the TRACS. But like I said, it didn't always happen and never happened before in those kind of conditions. Oh well.

Mine did this on a small patch of ice.. it sounded like it reved up but only the drivers side wheels went over it.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Both cars are similar ,long, snowy winter, happened within 24 hours or each other, early spring. Ah, yes. These two Swedes are In HEAT!

Sometimes tires can make some pretty strange noises. My mom got some new snow tires on her AWD minivan, (ugh), and I heard a pretty impressive whining noise when I drove it though a puddle one time. I thought the transmission was about to fail, but I was told that it's due to the new tires. Maybe there was something special about the road conditions during that storm that make your tires whine?

I am using Nokian Hakka Q's, and my friend is too. But I have driven through some very nasty storms this year and it has never happened before. It really sounded like it was comming from the drive train, but I guess in your case it did too. Very odd.

Just a wild guess, but maybe slush is splashing into the engine compartment and getting into the drive belts and/or fan???
