intake and exhaust VVT timing ? V70-XC70 2004

Does anyone have the procedure for adjusting the Variable Valve Timing for the intake and the exhaust on the B5254T engine. I'm having a bit of a hard time finding a consistant description of how to set the VVT units for both cams. Most refer to the exhaust only.

Thanks

Greg

There are 2 VVTs!?!? You will need a cam holding tool because the torque is tremendous.

    Read this thread:

    And then this one:

Both are started by the same person who was having a mechanic do the cam seal.

I read those. Screwing it up does not sound like much fun.

It sure looks like two of VVT units to me. Two identical units, the intake is blue and the exhaust is that anodized yellow color (except that it is not aluminium). I'd send you a picture, but the card in my camera is dead.

You can come over and see them for yourself. I don't suppose you have a cam holding tool laying around...

        Greg,

I feel so bad about my initial advice. I pictured an earlier model in my mind, without VVT, and it is quite easy to replace the seal on those.

No, I do not have a cam locking tool. When installing cams for a new head gasket, some have used angle iron to fit in the rear of both cams to keep them from turning. The Haynes manual for the 850 describes this, I could send you a picture.

          Hi Klaus,

No need to feel bad, unless that it is that you are not here working on this thing. A standard sprocket would be too easy. I'm a little concerned that I'm not finding anything with engines with two VVT units. This engine is a bit of an oddball, remember the thing about the serial number and the timing belt tensioner ?

Haynes has a picture of a cam holder in their V70 manual, but it does not appear to have any way to attach it to the head. I imagine that holder going flying across the garage as I try to pull 120 Nm on the VVT unit mounting bolt.

I may decide that, for the time being, oil is cheap and just replace the timing belt and water pump. I'll probably have to buy the a copy of VADIS (VIDA?) and see what it says about adjusting the intake and exhaust valve timing. If I do that it would be nice to get one package that would also let me read the ABS codes. BTW, I think it is the driver's side sensor that is bad. The resistance is ~0.5 meg ohms.

Points and carbs all the way!

          Greg
