Proper temp gauge reading? V70-XC70 1999

I have just noticed that the needle on the temp gauge on my '99 NA V70 stays around the 2nd tick up the gauge. I don't know what temperature this indicates, but this seems low to me.

I took this car over from my wife, so I haven't been driving it much until recently and don't know what normal is.

The drive time temperature has been in the 50s lately so I would expect the gauge to read higher. I'm wondering if my thermostat has failed in the open position. Will an OBDII reader give me the actual temperature?

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen an OBDII reader display temps. The actual temp display should always be at the 1/2 mark, never lower or higher. If the thermostat is open all of the time, as you drive down the road the temp should get lower and then raise to the 'normal' zone when you stop and idle. The fan will keep it from overheating.

Replace the thermostat with OEM and you will get better gas mileage as well. Plus, the cabin will warm up sooner.

Now that I've noticed the gauge, I'm paying more attention to it. Driving home at 60mph for 10 miles in 60 degree weather, the gauge was reading 2-3 ticks below half. Would a failing sensor give low readings? Thanks.

Replace the thermostat, it is open. The gauge gets its reading from the ECT sensor, just below the thermostat. The ECT can fail, but usually when it does the temp will be off the scale. You can probably feel the heat in the top large hose about 2 minutes after starting a cold engine which is a second indicator that the thermostat has failed. Replacing the ECT sensor is easy when doing the thermostat also.

You will need to drain a quart or two of antifreeze from the radiator. Get a good T40 driver bit with at least a 2 inch extension to remove the screws. Do not overtighten the hose clamp. If you use a clean bucket, you may reuse the antifreeze.

Takes me about 30 minutes start to finish.
