Need ID help on 850's 850 94-97

What models or packages did the 850 come in from 94-97?

Can a GLT be a turbo? Would it say "turbo" anywhere on the car?

Does a turbo have all the equipment of a GLT?

When did the "low pressure" turbo come out? Would the car be badged as such?

Sorry for this basic stuff, but I have different people telling me different things, and it makes it hard to go in with your eyes open when many of these "sales-people" are trying to pull wool over them. Thanks

Re: Need ID help on 850's 850 94-97

As stated below, the 850 GLT was a light pressure turbo in MY97. Before this, only the 850 Turbo was indeed a turbo (full pressure).

To distinguish the MY97 GLTs from the pre 97 GLTs, just check out the exhaust tip. Rectangular? Light pressure turbo from 1997. Circular? Normally aspirated engine from pre-97.

As far as options and equipment go, a GLT could be optioned up with nearly all the features of the turbo, I'm sure. Just depends on the buyer at the time.

    Kevin,

Christine mentioned a good source and information, to confuse you even further...early 850s (like mine) were all built as GLTs but didn't have GLT stamped on the back...why? because there was no other version (GLE for example) to distinguish it from. When the GLE came out, it was then neccessary to stamp the higher priced model. This happened towards the end of 1994. Also did you know that Volvo made 10V 850s as well!

Re: Need ID help on 850's 850 94-97

    Kevin:

For info on years and models I would check out jdpower.com (see link below). Go to "Automotive"; then to "Tell me About a Vehicle". You can type in all years of Volvo and check out specs for selected year/model under "Performance" (turbos will be noted as 'turbo gas' with additional HP noted). Additional trim/package info is also available on that page.

I do know that a GLT can be a turbo - albeit light pressure - but this was not introduced on the 850 until 1997. However, a '97 850 GLT (which is light pressure turbo) is not specifically badged as 'turbo' - just says GLT - basically indistinguishable from a '96 which is also badged as 'GLT' but does not have light pressure turbo. (Yeah - it can get confusing!)

    Good Luck!
