So how hard is it? V70-XC70

To those who have read one of my latest posts, you'll know that my Mechanical tensioner fell apart. Factory original, mileage 145k. Ugh.

Any ways, have ordered a new timing belt kit from FCP and will be attempting to put this on this weekend in hopes that I did not destroy the head and valves.

So in the meantime I've been reading up on what it will take to pull the head and cam shaft off if in the end it needs to be done, and quiet frankly I'm overwhelmed.

Is it really supposed to be this hard?

Can someone point me to a detailed description with lots of pictures laying out what needs to be done?

    Head replacement is hard V70-XC70

    This is not novice work, but is doable. There are a few tutorials online, Google will help you find them. One is on Matthews.

    There are 2 'special' tools you will need to make: cam position tool, just angle iron with a couple of holes drilled in it to keep the cams orientated for install. The other is a cam cover hold down tool, a couple of spark plugs with welded rods, threaded at the top, to hold down the cover - the cover bolts will not handle the torque individually.

    You will need new head bolts, lots of them.

    The best write up is in the 850 Haynes manual, if you like print. One of the pictures is upside down (cam cover) by design.

    You will need RTV and a small foam roller to apply it with. Volvo is expensive, but will allow the cam cover to come off again if needed. Avoid RTV that is too strong, this is aluminium to aluminium we are talking about.

    There are a few people here who have do this and will be glad to help.

    BTW, when you try to get the old timing belt off... If after you have removed the little dirt shield on the bottom and you cannot get the belt out at the crank, just cut the belt. The new belt will slide right in.

    Make sure you get the proper sized belt! The engine number is on the belt cover as well as on the engine - firewall side, of course.

      Hello, You don't need any special tools, just mark everything with white out for orientation. The cam cover will pull right down with the bolts starting from front to back and the 3 turns each until torque spec. Please do not use RTV your engine will leak oil. Use the Volvo gasket material, it goes on very easy and doesn't clog oil holes. Make sure you use an assembly lube on the cam and lifters. If you have an oil adjusted cam gear just make sure cam is straight across and the advance gear is rotated clockwise all the way, then the timing will be right. I have done about 50 or 60 head gasket jobs and I have only used a tool once on a 2005 with two cam advances for a oil seal repair. Head bolts can be reused if you can do the measurement on the bolts, I have reused them on about half of the jobs and had no problems. Make sure you use the assembly lube on the bolt threads before installing, not all the way up just the first 10mm. after everything is torqued down and your ready for timing belt turn camshafts to make sure everything is turning free, bring back up to your marks and then install timing belt. After that, everything else is a piece of cake. Good luck and just think about each step you used to take apart and do the reverse.

      Klaus,

      Just wanted to update you.

      This past weekend I finally got the new head installed. Also installed the intake and exhaust manifold's.

      I have some "specialty" tools coming on Tuesday that will allow me to fit the upper head to lower head section. So far all has gone well.

      Plan to spend tomorrow night reading and then re-reading my haynes manual on how to properly install the cams so that they are set and ready to go on Wednesday night. I've come to far to now screw this part up.

        Sounds like good progress. Take your time and do not over glue the cover, a nice even thin coat of the RTV will do nicely. Remember, the photo of the cams locked in place in the Haynes manual is viewed upside down.

        I feel sorry for your back, the amount of time bending over the engine bay has got to hurt.

        Remember to crank the engine over twice 'by hand' before putting the spark plugs back in. Without the plugs, there should be no resistance at all.

          Finished up the job today. Had to charge the battery for a few minutes.

          Turned the key and it pretty much fired right up.

          I'm glad to have this job behind me.
