Hi all, I want to know the life span of the volvo tranny.

Can any of u report your mileage when you need to replace your tranny?

Re: Survey - what is the mileage of your volvo when u need to replace ur tranny

I have a problem with this survey as well, seeing that many people have replaced the tranny due to bad diagnoses. For example, my PNP switch went out and 2 Volvo dealers said the tranny needed replacement. Replaced a 90 dollar part and it runs like new with 76k. I have seen the same with people who had bad solenoids. My guess is that 95% had a tranny replaced when it was just a switch or a solenoid, or fluid issues. Every single good independent Volvo mechanic I talked to said they rarely if ever had to replace these trannys.

If it is a Volvo tranny it is very rare that you would have to replace it

BUT, the 850's use Asian-Warner transmission, and they are terrible, If it is a 93" 850, the average is about 60,000 miles and the 94's are not much

    better.

I had to have mine replaced at 46,500 miles. Volvo certified. They told me that they don't even look at the fluid when they certify because of the 100,000 mile service interval on the tranny. Dealer replaced it and the car runs like new.

I had to replace mine at 85k miles. I bought it used. Looks like the previous owner must have been really rough on the transmission. 2300. bucks later it drives great.

Re: Survey - what is the mileage of your volvo when u need to replace ur tranny 850 1994

    Johnny,

FYI, I've got 115K miles on my '94 automatic transmission. Not a single problem with it at all, and I push the car pretty hard.

Not that it's related to the current 850 transmissions, but my previous 1980 240DL sedan had over 275K miles on it's original 3-speed automatic transmission when I sold it, with no problems at all.

I'd say that in general, Volvo transmission hold up pretty well.

Type of driving, engine, performance mods, and especially maintenance (fluid changes) will also have a lot to do with the lifespan.

I don't think this would tell you what you want to know

unless you also look at the number who did not replace

the transmission (you are only surveying failures).

There may be a lot of them still running with 125K

miles but you won't know this based on your question.
