Well the '95 850 may have finally gone the way of the 740?? All the gauges are lit but none of them move. The clock display is OK but no temp or mileage data. The check engine light is on and the tranny arrow is flashing. Other than that is starts fine and idles as usual. It seems to shift OK other than it probably is shifting into first a thousand rpm higher than normal on the first shift after startup but then settles down to the normal shift points. Haven't read any codes yet but it could be interesting??? Will do it this afternoon after getting back home from work.

Well I found one from a '95 at the PYP yard and it almost solved my problem. I now have all the gauges back ...except the speedo. Good thing I also bought a 60 day warrantee with the used cluster. Will need to go back again.

Klaus certainly is the "go to guy" here but kinda` sounds to me like a DIM issue. All the symptoms you describe were exactly the same as happened in my wife`s XC70 a few years ago. If so, Xemodex?

Sorry Rancher, 1995 didn't have a DIM as you know it. The instrument panel does have a little memory, but it is mostly on a single circuit board that never fails.
It does have OBD boxes in the engine compartment, no code reader required!

Sorry....what's a "DIM issue" and what is Xemodex? I managed to find a schematic for the instrument cluster. Pretty sure mine's a Yazaki(sp?)type. The axle speed sensor signal seems to do through the speedometer and other gauges before it goes to the TCM. So I'm still leaning towards a cluster problem although I still have to verify proper sensor resistance. Will crawl under the car later today to check and take the cluster out if needed.

I suggest pulling all of the codes in the "A" box and clearing them. You might just have a bad speed sensor. In our salty road climate, it can just be that the connectors corroded and cleaning helps. The speed sensor is unique to the 1994-5 models, the 1996+ cars have the signal go through the ABS module first.

Well the only tranny code is "No speedometer signal". Makes sense! I checked the tranny sensor and connector and it looks OK. Am I looking at an instrument cluster problem or something else?? The tranny axle sensor wire seems to go directly to the TCM module before going to the speedo.
