Another frozen brake cable? 850

My project car just went through a left side brake cable replacement. Now, I wonder if the right side cable is frozen. Is there and easy way to determine if the cable is in fact rusted in place? Or could it just be a delaminated brake shoe?

When I removed the left rotor, I couldn't put it back on because the brake cable wouldn't budge. The car was up on the jack for a week waiting for a new cable. I don't want to go through that again.

Right now, if I jack up the wheel and engage the Ebrake, the wheel rotates backward and not forward. It does not grab when I pull the handle and drive forward - didn't try it in reverse.

Any insight is appreciated. If I need a cable, I need to know before 3pm EST so I can order a new one.

    Another frozen brake cable? 850

    Hi Klaus,
to my understanding it's typical designed operation to grap forwards more than backwards. As you have new wire on one side there is no good balance between the wires. take the old wire side off and have a look at the shoes adjust the shoes on both sides with wires balanced giving equal force on both sides.
If you are lucky, that's it.

      Brake cable is good 850

I decided to take off the rotor anyway. A hanger for the rear shoe broke off a long time ago. That explains the noise from that side and why the brake lever partially engaged the drum.

The OEM shoes come with new hangers in the box, but not springs. I replaced both hangers, shoes, and the rotor (the back side really looked bad). New brake pads and all is well.

The lever between the two forward ends of the cable is now pulling both cables at the same rate. Now I can park where I want to!!! No more worries about popping out of gear and rolling.

      The car is almost drivable...

        Brake cable is good 850

Congratulations, it seems that you been real busy with this project.

I hope that I never have to replace one of this cables. The hand brake shoes

do rust w/ time. I went through this a few years back and it was no fun getting

        the rotors out!!!

        Please post some pictures!!!

Removing rear rotors - tip 850

In order to remove the rear rotors, 2 things need to be done first. Slacken the cables at the center console, I use a T40 but once used a large screwdriver. The next part is done after the wheel is removed - loosen the brake shoes by turning the star wheel until it stops turning. On the 850, the star wheel is just left of TDC, the S/V70 is down by 4 or 7 o'clock, a flashlight is needed to locate the star wheel. Caution, on the 850s, the ABS sensor is at TDC, made of black plastic and is just above the small spring.

If you remove the rotor, make sure you use a toothbrush and clean off the ABS ring on the hub. A dust mask is a good thing to wear.

The cable replacement is not difficult, just a pain. The rear carpet needs to be lifted to get to the plastic clip that holds the cable to the floor. I do not remove the carpet, but just lift it enough to raise the hard cover under the carpet to expose the plastic clip. The clip is pried up with a screwdriver and then removed from the cable.

As to pictures, yes I have a camera. Unfortunately, the lighting is terrrible in the garage and when both hands are busy...

HF63, this car came from Champain/Urbana. The rust on the calipers is amazing! To say nothing about the rust on the inside of the rear rotors. I guess they use just as much salt on the roads downstate as they do in Chicago. I had to use a screwdriver to scrape away enough rust to get the pads to slide into the calipers.
Your V70 visor works in this car, but there is a slight variation in the up position. It doesn't completely lock into place, but it no longer falls down! I am quite happy with it.

Removing rear rotors - tip 850

We got above 40 today so I attacked the LT brake cable.
Amazing that there were no problems - even using a ScamTech cable.

But 3 hours to do this job is crazy.

Removing rear rotors - tip 850

While getting the ccenter console up and out on the 850 is a pain, what slowed me down was all of the rust this car got while it lived in Illinois.

Everything under the car has a 1/4 inch layer of rust. That T25 holding the cable to the body is almost rusted through. The rust on the back side of the brake caused me at least 30 minutes of trial and error to get the cable cover back in place.

I am currently thinking of going back to the pick&pull to get a pair of calipers for the rear. At least the P&P look better than the rusty globs that bolt to my axle.

40F? Heat wave! Actually, the weather people around here are trying to forcast 32F for Tuesday and 'mild' for the rest of the week. Then we go to negative numbers for a while. The garage floor has ice on it, from the front tires of the other 2 cars. Hot engines raise the temp to above 32F for a little while.

CT is just too crowded and expensive for me. And I love natural gas.

Yes, it should be pretty mild this whole week. That's fine with me.

Agree with "too crowded and expensive". There really is no reason to stay in CT. I've told my daughters to get away from here as soon as they can. This state just does not offer much anymore. Although the Governor shouts from the rooftops how business friendly he has made this state, I've yet to see improvement.

I've picked up a few jy parts for the 854. If it was my daily driver, I'd probably shop more at the junkyard.

      Shoes move 850

I jacked up the wheel again. This time with the brake off and the wheel rotates in both directions - with a lot of touching noise. So the cable appears to move a little bit.

I will hold off on the order, with my fingers crossed.

I will still replace shoes, hardware, rotor, and pads. And grease the moving parts.
