Water under the rug - Driver's Seat - Source? 850 1996

Hello All,

I have a `996 850 GLT wagon, 5 speed manual, with 250,000. About 6 weeks ago I had the heater core replaced. Following the replacement of the heater core, the rug area under the pedals where the coolant previously collected dried out. About two weeks ago, I noticed the rug area under the clutch and brakes pedals was wet/damp again. However, there wasn't a green color or film residue to the dampness normally associated with coolant. Instead, the dampness seems to be caused by ordinary water. Assuming the replacement heater core hasn't gone bad, does any one have an idea how water is getting into this area?

Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

Have you located the problem? I had a similar issue awhile back and thought it was water leaking in around the fuse box. As Klaus was suggesting, it could also be from the sunroof drain, in my case it was the hose from the drain that had come loose, so the water chose to run down the pillar instead. A bother to pry off flashing around the pillar and the edge of the ceiling liner, but that's what was needed for me.

Check under the hood where the water seals around the fuse/relay box are. If they are missing/out of place, or the drain tube is clogged, rain water can enter. If like us , you have had no rain......well good luck !

        Vjr,

Thank you for this suggestion of a possible source for this leak.

You might want to take a cup of water and pour it down the drain holes at the forward edges of the sun roof. The water should pour out from under the back of the front fender.

Otherwise, you will need to remove the kick plate under the dash and dab around with a dry paper towel to figure where the water is coming from.

These certainly aren't 850 specific, but it could be the plastic weather seal inside your driver's door panel is torn allowing water to drain from the bottom of the door onto the floor. Check the rug around the door and the bottom of the panel to confirm this. A slimmer possibility is water leaking from a bad windshield seal.
