TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME V70-XC70 98

Last night my right turn signal started blinking at twice the normal speed. I initially thought that this was a indicator that a bulb was out. Once home I walked around the car and to my suprise, front and back lights were blinking (at twice the normal speed). It does appear that the front right (my problem) is not as bright as the front left. Are there 2 bulbs in that housing, one of which might be out?

Thanks

Ask the dealer to replace *both* sockets at the same time, or you'll be back there again within a few months for the other side. I know, I know, this one should be a no-brainer for any decent service department, you shouldn't have to ask, etc., etc., but it actually happened to me!

      Re: TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME V70-XC70 98

My turning signals on my '98 V-70 have just begin blinking fast also. Does this mean that if I take it to my dealer they will replace the sockets and bulbs free of charge (I have not received any notice of a recall)?

        Re: TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME V70-XC70 99

This is usually caused by a short in one the the indicator blubs. The bulb may still work, but not a brillantly as usual. Changing the blub will remedy the problem temperarily. There may be a recall for the side indicators on your vehicle. I know that there is on the '99 V70's. Try contacting your dealer or Volvo directly.

yes..your dealer (if he has parts available, will replace both bulbs and sockets with a new style. For some reason the campaign (recall) letters have not gone out, but rest assured they will. it is no charge to all volvo owners on 98 - 2000 v,s and c70's. also included will be 2001 c70's.

        Geeps

Go to IPD and buy the glass base bulbs. They will not arc and burn out. The problem will be fixed and this problem will not come back.

I tried the bulbs from IPD on my wife's car. Thought it had cured the problem, but 3 months later it happened again. I just had the sockets replaced by the dealer under the recall. Maybe you'll have better luck.

    Re: TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME S70 98

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. Went to the local dealer to get a replacement bulb but was told to see the service center. Turns out that Volvo has a "campaign" to replace both the bulb and socket on both units. As Mr Niblett mentioned, I never received a recall notice from Volvo about this.

Did they do the replacement at that time or are you waiting for parts?

    Re: TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME V70-XC70 98

Very common problem on the 98s (suprised you have not seen it

before). Most often, it is the left one (it sits on longer at

left turn stops). I believe there is a recall in progress to

update the bulb sockets but I have not yet recieved a notice

    for my 98.

Get out the manual and look at how you get at the bulb (taking off

the lens cover is easy once you see how it is done). Pull out

the bulb and I bet it has some slight burn marks. You can clean

the marks up with some sandpaper or just get another bulb. That

should keep you going until the newer sockets become available

(actually, I think they are going back to an older socket

    design).

IPD also sells a bulb that has a ceramic base (instead of platsic)

that is supposed to resist the heat and associated burning problems.

    www.ipdusa.com.

Oh, when the turn signal bulb fails the side marker light

seems to flash. So, that is probably what you are seeing.

Kinda uses side bulb as a backup (but I don't know if Volvo

did it that way on purpose).

It is also a problem for the 99s.

Apparently the dealer said that there is a recall for this problem.

He fixed it on the spot without any charge.

      Re: TURN SIGNAL DOING DOUBLE-TIME V70-XC70 98

      Hello, Ray!

I've replaced the bulbs (and sockets) in my '98 V70 a few times also, the common problem for this year. When mine have failed (you're right about the left one), the lamp continued to illuminate, but not as brightly, probably because of the added resistance of the carbon buildup from arcing. My car doesn't have side lights... BD
