I operated on my turn signal switch today to fix the hit-and-miss functioning. I documented the process below, with photos:
1. Remove 3 torx screws from below the steering column. Make sure the column is tilted and locked in the lowest possible position.
2. Separate the upper steering column trim from the lower. In the case of my 2003 V70 it was NOT necessary to remove the DIM bezel, but you can if you want as it would get the upper column trim completely out of the way. Remove the 2 small screws that secure the turn signal switch to the column. Grasp the switch stalk and wiggle it slightly up and down while pulling it straight out from the column. The electrical connection will separate.
3. Photo number 3 shows the multi-pin electrical connection when the switch is removed.
4. Once the switch is removed from the car, remove the small screw that secures the circuit board to the switch.
5. Lay the circuit board back toward the stalk to expose the switching contacts inside. (Red circled contacts are the left and right turn indicator contacts; green are the deadlight dimmer contacts.)
6. Both moving contacts can be lifted out for cleaning.
7. The springy fingers on each moving contact can be lifted SLIGHTLY to increase friction with the circuit board. But don’t over do it.
8. Clean the contact ribbons on the circuit board. I used alcohol and CAREFULLY scraped them with an x-acto blade. The photo looks like I really scraped the heck out of them, but I really didn’t. You can use whatever you wish.
9. After re-assembling the switch and screwing the circuit board back down, you can switch the stalk first one way and then the other, and each time move the cancelling tab one way or the other to verify it still cancels properly and that nothing became dislodged within the switch. Return the switch to the car and re-install in the reverse order of which it was removed.
