Hang on to your hats 850

I just bought a junker 1996 854 GLT with a manual 5 speed. It has unknown mileage, but at least 170K. A newer clutch. An NA engine, of course. No severe body damage, but the bottom of the trunk lid has a little dent. White with aluminum spoke wheels.

It needs a LOT of TLC. The seat skins are both gone, seat bottom and back. The visor falls down. The ECC is on permanent defrost. The door stay is inop and the window rattles when the door closes. But the radio works!

The PS fluid is low, but no leaks. In fact, no leaks anywhere. Don't know about the AC as the ambient temps are too low.

It is real dirty, in and out.

First item is to fix the ECC and get heat to the floor.
Next is the timing belt.
And then repl the gear in the odo so that starts working again.

Hi Klaus,

Congrats on your new project, did you get service records?

Do you plan to clean out the EGR system?
If so maybe you could try to clear the intake manifold vacuum port
through the throttle body opening, and leave the intake manifold in place?
I bought a cheap harbor freight boroscope to try that the next time, and hopefully
avoid the need to yank the intake.

I have two reasonable boneyards nearby, but the cars are moving in and out quickly with high scrap metal prices....Steel was $190 a ton here this summer.
(Compare that to what the junkyards pay for a scrap Volvo.)

What's service history on a cheap car 850

I did find 2 oil changes at quickie lubes on the Carfax. I needed to verify mileage, reason for Carfax. Car came with a spare instrument cluster in the trunk.

It is from Illinios originally, so no EGR. I might treat the car to AutoRx to clean out the sludge, after I take a look at the PCV.

Right now I am trying to sort out the ECC. Seems 2 of the damper motors are not functioning. This would be fun, but I pulled my back yesterday and even sitting hurts!

BTW,
Are you going to convert the generator to NG before the next Nor'easter?

What's service history on a cheap car 850

Hi Klaus,

No EGR?

I'm stuck for a while with the Natural Gas conversion, since I need to run a gas
pipe to the garage. Gotta find a plumber with a gas-fitters license so I can
get a permit and be covered if anything goes sour. The insurance company would
love an easy out if there's a fire here! It is a short run from the house and an existing line to a gas stove, but the line may need to be replumbed to larger pipe size to have enough BTU to run the 7HP Tecumsah.
(For others reading this: We're talking about a tri power conversion kit to run a gasoline generator off Natural Gas, propane or gas, and natural gas is the equivalent of 88c gasoline and doesn't foul up the carb like crappy E10 gasoline, and you don't worry about finding gas in a blizzard)

If you hurt your back, see if you can find a hot tub or sauna...maybe at a local
racquetball place or YMCA. That might help if it's a muscular issue.
If not, maybe several stiff doses of DonQ and 7-up might help?
The back might still be full of pain, but you won't be! :-)

Regards, Bill

LOL! After giving my 1967 220 to a Brickboard member, the garage had a hole and I was bored. I was on the lookout for either a cheap C70 with a good top or a 2004 C70 in very good shape. Daily Craigslist surfing didn't help, there was a 2001 C70 for cheap, but it had the 5 speed auto and poor maintenance and a leaky top.

So I found a neglected white 854, female owned and with a newer clutch. How could I pass that up? My wife thought it was a good idea, cheaper than dirt, and would give me something to do.

It follows me home today. I will sit in the holy seats and ponder the immediate improvements and where to start. The 'local' pick&pull doesn't have much of a selection, so I may have to wait for cheap parts.

If the temperature gets over 40F, I might even wash the poor thing.

I brought the car home today. It actually has a power passenger seat, with memory!? The car drives good, but there are a bunch of little things wrong. I will be spending the next week making 2 lists: new parts and P&P parts. I will let you know when I get it done.

Thanks for the offer. I will be in Chicago area for Turkey day.

Klaus,

I have some parts from a 94 NA 850 wagon. Let me know if there is anything you need that may work. I pulled most of what I thought would be useful after I fixed the "deer killer" white sedan. I kept doors, sunroof assy, many components with wires etc etc. I am near Indianapolis. It had a tan interior.

Fellow 850 driver...I do have the anti skid module. It is "as removed" from a 94 850 turbo wagon. I drove it from southern Illinois to Indianapolis with no ABS light and braking was good. I then parted the car out and have many parts in my garage. I do not know how much it is worth. How much is it worth to you? I just need it to be out of my garage along with many other parts.

Mark

I appreciate the offer. The ABS module currently works, about 50% of the time. It is not on my high priority list yet, and when it does bubble up to the top I wonder if I shouldn't just solder it myself. This car does not have traction control.

It also doesn't have a switch for the radio antenna, which would be nice to have. I have a switch, just not the wiring that goes behind it.

The only hard part at the moment will be seat skins. I appreciate the offer, but have to also weigh the cost of shipment. I might be back later with a list!

Right now, I need to fix the defrost flap and the instrument cluster. I need to go to a dealer and get the correct mileage before I can register the sale with the state. Which means putting on my best manners so the dealer doesn't charge me a lot to scan the miles and reset the ECC codes.

Guessing this is intended to be the "winter car".
Nice that it's a stick.

Winter and greasy finger car. Otherwise, I would have bought a much more expensive VW convertible, pre-1980. I need something to do!!!
