850 Odo gear 850 1995

Susan has a new old 850. Apparently mechanical speedo works fine, ODO does not. Can you replace the gear in them like you do a late 140 or early 240?

i just bought the repair kit from IPD. you get a .50 cent gear and a video that shows you how to replace it. Takes about an hour. i didn't bother trying to reset the mileage. They say opposites attract, My sainted wife's grandpa was an Indian, and mine was a cowboy. She's only had to put up with me for the last 25 years....

Comon problem. BTW, the speedo is not mechanical, ie. no cable.

Do a Google for '850 odo repair' and there are a few good ones.

To remove the instrument panel, just lift up the left side to get the cluster out:

Leave the car in the sun to get the dash warmed up so it bends easily. The vents really do pop out without breaking :>)

Use the "A" box to get the current mileage. A-7. Push the button 5 times, wait a second , the 1 time, wait again, then once more - that gets you the right three odo digits. 555-1-1-2 will get you the left 3 digits. Just count the blinking lights. A zero will be 10 flashes.

Use a drill and a pencil with eraser to turn the odo to the proper mileage.

I guess I am a long way behind:
"Use the "A" box to get the current mileage."
Is this something on the car or something I should buy?
Sorry about the implied ignorance. OTOH on Sunday I will be able to tell
you how 50 years of being married to a Swede feels.

50 years! Good start. I got 45 in with a Heinz 57 from MN, but mostly German to match my heritage.

Amazing women don't disown us, probably because we are under ours and the kids cars.

        http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm

The 1995 has 2 diagnostic boxes on the passenger fender, hanging off the computer box in the engine bay. I suggest going through each A & B port and erase any outstanding codes, some can be left around for a while. There is also a diagnostic port under the 'coin tray' in the center console for a hand held diagnostic tool, but that won't handle Volvo specific codes like seats, climate control, SRS, etc.

To remove the vent grills, turn them down so they face the floor and then pull on one side until it comes loose.

I found this for the headliner:

          Yup. Do the odometer repair.
It looks intimidating, but it isn't as hard as it looks.

Rolling the odo ahead about 18,000 miles by hand to get to the right mileage took the most time for the repair.
Klaus has recommended using a pencil eraser on an electric drill, but I was afraid of getting eraser shavings into the "works" so I did it by hand.

I'm glad I did the repair. The non-working odometer was annoying to me. OCD?
