Rear Driveshaft Removal V70-XC70 2003

Hi All-Been awhile since my last post. I guess that can be a good thing! Well, my wife's 2003 XC70 (around 200,000 miles)is now making some annoying rattle (already checked heatshields-OK)from what sounds like the rear drivshaft/center bearing region under the handbrake. It also has an intermittent driveline shutter but getting worse. I took a look at the history of postings on this topic last night and I couldn't really find a good description of how to do it. Looks pretty straight forward from crawling underneath the car. My questions are this. Can someone send/link me with a step by step process (Vadis?)? Does the Exhaust system need to be removed? From all indications, it sounds like the car can be driven in Front Wheel Drive "Mode" until I get the drivshaft rebuilt by my local Driveshaft Shop. Will this harm any of the Haldex components? Not about to spend $1,000 for one from my local dealer. Also Part #'s for all related bearings would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Really appreciate all that you folks do to help the "shadetree mechanic"......

It is quite simple and straight forward. Mark each section with paint where the shaft joins, you will have to reassemble the shaft in proper alignment. Then remove the Torx screws for the forward CV joint, pull the forward part of the shaft from the center bearing, remove the center bearing carrier and drop the rear portion from the haldex section.

Before you remove everything, try to find out what is loose and need fixing. If it is just the center carrier or the front CV joint, you will have a hard time figuring it out after removal.

No, the exhaust is not in the way.

Rear Driveshaft Removal V70-XC70 2003

Thanks Klaus for the prompt response. Very much appreciated. I tried what you advised, but after 3 hours of trying tonight I have a problem. I cannot for the life of me get the front cone part of the driveshaft past the mating bevel gear flange. I ended up taking the two bolts of the center bearing out along with the rear driveshaft flange bolts and I still don't have enough clearance at the front to slip it by the bevel gear flange. Once I do get it by through there is maybe 6-8" of clearance forward towards the turbo though. I assume by slipping the driveshaft forward, this will allow the rear joint to slip out of the rear flange and then pull out the whole drivshaft assy towards the rear and there is more opening clearance to work with in the back? Maybe I'm not seeing things correctly laying on my garage floor? Thanks for any other words of wisdom.............
