xc70 No forward or reverse after tranny flush V70-XC70 2002

Hello all, I just bought this 2002 xc70, and after about a week the reverse began a delay engage. Sooo, I do a transmission flush, all seems well. I drive the car for about 12 miles, the tranny goes into limp, warning light comes on. I get the car to my dads, and now no forward and no reverse. Cleared codes, no change. I am wondering if the shift solenoids could be the problem? I find it strange that with the old fluid it would work and the new it will not. The old fluid was quite dark, but did not have a burnt smell. I have dropped the transmission, and pulled the cover over the soleonoids and the #4 does not seem to be working. Any ideas?

    Update:
just spoke with a transmission expert, and was told that more than likely the clutches had come apart and stopped up the internal filter. Rebuild will cost about the same as a reman tranny.

The bands did not come apart and then stop up the filter, the filter is clogged and ruined the bands. 170K miles without a flush will do all of the damage already.

Erie Vovo is a very good salvage yard. Volvo make them change their name.

Make sure you use 3309 fluid in the 5 speed auto.

I was going to ask what fluid was used.
How big a deal is it if the shop drained and refilled rather than flushing? I furnished them plenty of 3309 and told him to flush but he drained and refilled. I think he used about 5 quarts or so, which didn't seem like enough.

I forgot if yours is a 4 or 5 speed, the capacities are just a little different. A drain on a 4 speed is about 3.5 quarts, out of a total of 9 quarts.

On Matthews site, they suggest draining followed by a flush. But, always drain a cold tranny so that the garbage is in the sump and not in the works. It only takes 30-40 minutes to flush at home, but about 10-12 quarts of 3309 total.

Regardless, check the current level of the fluid. It will still work nicely at 2 quarts low, but overfill is a killer. Unknowingly, I ran mine 2 quarts low and there were no complaints until the temps were below -10F; then the tranny made bad noises until the ATF warmed up.

How many miles on trans when it gave up the ghost. BTW, lifetime warranty on transmissions from Erie Vovo

176,000. Thanks for the info on Erie Volvo!

The local tranny shop would not even talk to me about a rebuild because the tranny was out of the car. Geezz.

The tranny expert that I talk to was in another city near by. He said that he would rebuild. He also said that if for some reason that water or moisture got into the transmission, it would destroy the clutches. He said other chemicals weren't bad about destroying clutches. He also said that the electronics should not cause a no engage scenario, that the car should still go into gear.

It's Erie Vovo not Erie Volvo. I know it's strange but it really is Vovo

Probably because they are a junkyard and not a dealer they can't call themselves Erie Volvo. Legal copyright or something of that nature.

Or maybe it is simply a play on words. I know people who say WOWO instead of Volvo...:)
