greetings, my name is belle, and it's been a long while since i've visited these forums, but i do remember klaus!
here are my issues for the 94 volvo 850 turbo wagon, please:
a. 5 days ago, after a sudden stop, the indicator lamps illuminated and the steering was hard.
b. friend replaced serpentine belt - **however ** the A/C unit makes a bad sound now.
c. next day, and following day, always breaking to stop, indicator lamps flickered. i turned car off/on then car seemed OK.
d. last night, smell of burning [wire-smell/electrical?] and noticed white smoke from passenger side. pulled over, raised hood and got out flashlight. didn't find origin of smoke, only strong burning wire smell. checked oil, oil cap, all fluids were fine, but oil was on top of motor and around the hoses in front, side, and rear. the oil cap seal was intact, and there was no residue. looked clean inside.
e. waited a while, turned over sluggishly. repeat several times before start up.
my questions, please:
serpentine belt connected to A/C compressor? can this car be driven to shop 15 miles? what on earth does this resemble to you, problem-wise, please and thank you!

thank you for the responses here!
it was a bad A/C compressor, so i had a new one installed, and a few days after that, my coolant level was dropping. i noticed a small leak while looking under the car, at the radiator; thought the leak was coming from an area or 'seam' near the end of radiator [passenger side].
sure enough, a friend and i pulled the radiator, after way too much coolant was being lost, and there was a DENT in the radiator. shop denies any accidents, and there's really no way to know for sure. replaced radiator, hoses, clamps, coolant, and added transmission fluid.
that was last weekend!
new problem this weekend!!
up arrow flashing and i had not much acceleration, so i drove in L / 3Rd to pull over and have a look. all fluids there, but a thin, long hose was undone at the front of the car. there are two similar long/thin hoses. i couldn't tell where it connected, and i tried.
no one was available, have 33$ in checking, so i drove home in low gear. could the hose undone cause the up arrow/transmission gear issue?
i hope that is the case, please and thank you!!

Could the serpintine belt could be rubbing on some AC lines causing both the burning smell and "white smoke". Leaking ac coolant does look like white smoke but is odorless more or less. Turbo oil line o-rings can leak also.

The serpentine belt has nothing to do with the oil, so that is a separate problem.
You need to do 2 things. Open the hood, in daylight, turn the AC off and start the engine. Check the belt area for noises, you are looking for any pully that doesn't look like it is spinning or the side of the belt rubbing against something.
If you do not see/hear anything, then turn on the AC and look again. If the AC is causing the belt to slip or drag, you will probably need a new compressor - not cheap as the refridgerant also gets replaced along with the dryer.
Oil on top of the engine could be a bad cap seal, they get hard after a year or so and are very cheap to replace.
Whenever the serpentine belts stops turning/moving, the dash warning lights will come on and the steering hard, the alternator and PS pump are driven by the same belt. Similar to turning the key off or engine dying.

Why did your friend replace the belt? Was it broken as a result of this sudden incident?
If so, and from the other symptoms, it is likely that your a/c compressor siezed, causing the belt to break and the absence of the belt caused the power steering to fail.
I think the oil, burning wire smell, and the sluggishness are red herrings, at least until we have more information.
If you keep the a/c off, is there still a problem?
If so, could be that the a/c clutch pulley bearing is siezed, or is siezing.
