Power Steering groaning? Turbo whine? S70 98

Over the past few days I have experienced a groaning which I believe is comming from the steering. The details:

1. Car has 43,000 miles - S70 w/ LPT

2. Start car in morning or after car sits for a few hours.

3. Accelerate while making a left turn and the car will groan until I straighten out. Not sure if this is a left only phenomena, I will test

right turns this afternoon.

Exactly how much noise should the turbo charger make? Mine seems to make a low pitched whine, louder when cold but always audible. Is this normal?

Thanks for you help.

Thanks for all you help. I checked the fluid level and it seems to be ok, the dealer agrees. I have made an appointment to have it looked at n more detail. It seems to be groaning more often now.

Check fluid level - note cold and hot levels marks on extension under the cap. If it is really low - like you can see the bottom of the reservoir, then you may have air in the system. Pumps can make unusual noises when they get air in them. If so, fill & bleed.

This turned out to be the case for me after the dealer fixed a leak but didn't bother to top up the system... Just a thought anyway.

    Jim,.

In addition to what Charles said to check, note that in cold weather the steering wheel cowling may rub against the wheel covering..

If everything mechanical checks out, try this:

    1. Remove the three torx screws securing the cowl.

    2. Separate the upper and lower halves.

    3. Smear the wheel hub where it contacts the cowl liberally with a medium weight silicone grease.

    4. Re-install the cowl.

    Hope this helps,

    Bryan

I would not think it a turbo problem for a few reasons. LPTs usually do not make much noise. Second turbo noise is usually very high pitched or in some cases sounds like a vacuum leak. I would check your power steering fluid or maybe your CVs. I assume you know with a FWD car you should not push the car with the wheel turned. If I were you though I would check the power steering or the CVs.
