Bad heater core? V70-XC70 1998

I have a 98 V70 and have been noticing a smell of antifreeze when I turn the heat on. This morning after a week or more of not having to run the heat I turned it on and had the oder agian and hte windows fogged up and would not clear.

Does this sound like a heater core that has a leak?

Yep. Time to replace. Fortunately not a terribly difficult task, except for the body contortions caused by working under the dash.

There is a Ebayer selling a knock off for $49. Heck, at that price you couold buy a new one every other year and still be money ahead. Just make sure you get 2 new O rings.

To remove the right side kick panel, the glove box must come out. It is hiding the screws that hold the kick panel in place. Don't forget to clamp off the hoses at the firewall - engine side - and have a watertight plastic bag to put under the core during removal. There is a pint of coolant in the core.

      Klaus,

      Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have experience with the aftermarket cores?

After market heater core? V70-XC70 1998

Just recently, last month, one of the BB'rs installed this:

        http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-VOLVO-HEATER-CORE-HVAC-UPDATED-850-S70-V70-C70-94-95-96-97-98-99-00-9144221-/270925245463?fits=Make:Volvo|Model:850&hash=item3f14672c17&item=270925245463&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

The heater core is a non critial safety item and in my belief could be replaced by non-OEM. And with a One Year Warranty, 12,000 Miles warranty on parts only, "no questions asked" (labor not included), sounds good to me. The O rings are included.
