Shiftlock micro switch 850 94

'94 855 turbo will not shift from park without pressing override button. Is there anyway to test microswitch? How long of a project to replace the microswitch? What are shops getting to do the work(It's cold up here). And finally, am I doing any damage by using the override switch everytime I start the car?

Thanks,

Mark K.

Just another problem with the 850!

Re: Shiftlock micro switch 850 94

The shift micro switch sounds like your problem. When the ignition key is in positon II the power is available for the circuit. One thing I would recommend trying is: with the key in position II, try to get out of part, if it looks like you need the over ride, gently wiggle the ignition switch in position II, sometimes the ignition switch (electricial side) goes bad and won't supply the voltage to the circuit. You are not going to harm the system at all by using the mechanicial over ride.

Re: Shiftlock micro switch 850 94

Hey Mark,

Seems the shift micro switch is a common failure (mine ha been replaced twice in 56,000 miles).

The symtoms you describe point to a failure of this micro switch.

I believe the Volvo part number for the MICROSWITCH is # 9466028-9 - I paid the dealer $12.81 for the part a year ago.

The repair is not difficult if you're handy around cars.

Took me about one hour - mostly removing and re-installing the center console.

If you want to try to do it yourself - Go to

http://www.volvospeed.com

and get into Bay 13 under Volvo Repairs and Maintenance.

Bay13 has excellent detailed illustrated instructions on how to do the job.

Good Luck

BTW - If it were me, I would not waste time testing your old microswitch - Just Replace it !

Re: Shiftlock micro switch 850 94

FWIW...Also, be sure to check for volage and GOOD CURRENT FLOW (ie AMPERAGE) I replaced my microswitch and solenoid just to still not have it work. In the end, I found that it was the brake pedal switch that was not working. I suggest that you bypass the microswitch and verify operation of the solenoid before doing anything else. Doing this could have saved me from pulling the console out 3 times and buying a solenoid and microswitch. ($53.00 for both together from Volvo in a kit, ready to go.)
