Bosch Platinum Plugs 850 1995

Had a bad experience with Bosch Platinum plugs yesterday.

I changed out my AC Delco Rapid-fire #9's to Bosch Platinum plugs.

Car started fine but bogged at stops, idled rough and generally

performed much worse that the Delco's that had 15k miles on them.

I ultrasonically cleaned the AC's, checked the gap (.028) and put them back in. Car ran and idled great, no bogging.

The number was either 4228 or 5228 Bosch FD-7 Platinums.

you don't mention if your 850 is turbo. There are many people that swear by the Bosch plat's for the non turbo engine (myself included, as I have had great luck over the past 210,000 miles with them at 30-50k intervals)

I have heard the opposite said with the turbo engines (on Saabs too) that they prefer a copper core to a platinum. Though I cannot disagree with John O's statement to use OEM, I am certain there are aftermarket plugs that will perform as well in your car. Is it worth trying to find out which to save 30-40 bucks? Only you can decide. IPD can probably make a good recommendation for turbo plugs albeit one biased towards the product they sell.

I followed John O's advice and used Volvo plugs when I swapped out the old 3 weeks ago. No perceived improvement except piece of mind, but then again the old plugs looked absolutely great. I suspect they were only 18K old, but maybe, just maybe the originals. Alas, no records. New plugs from dealer: $51 US.

BTW, I asked the parts guy what he thought the plugs were, and he whispered "Bosch Plats." Who knows.

I put Bosch Platinums in mine three weeks ago and have found an improvement in mileage and overall performance. Then again, probably anything would have been an improvement over the old plugs, which were in the car I am guessing for 60K or more.

We just use the OEM Volvo plugs and they last at least 30K miles with no problems. Using OEM plugs, etc is usually best with any car.
