engine dies 850

Greetings. Engine died suddenly on road. No hint of trouble coming. Towed home. Engine cranks good but will not start. 45lbs. at fuel rail while cranking. Good hot spark off coil while cranking. Distributer rotor turns while cranking so timing belt good. Also cam and crank sensors are providing a firing solution and giving a hot, pulsing spark. Power stage and coil also must be good. Tested injector leads with a noid light and getting a bright pulse at #1 cyl. while cranking. After prolonged cranking, cannot smell any gas fumes around engine or at exhaust. Unusual? Thought the injector driver circuitry in the ECM was shot but the noid light suggests otherwise. I'm missing something and would be most grateful for some direction. Thanks very much. Bob

Other than taking the injector rail off to verify they're squirting I don't know what else you could do. Maybe try squirting some oil into the spark plug holes to get the compression back up.

Thanks for your interest. About to pull off rail, check compression and strength of spark at plug over prolonged cranking.

Fuel spraying from injectors. Noted that spark strength faded after extended cranking. Changed out the coil/power stage assembly with a spare and engine started. I should have known. Over the years, these things have failed on our 740s. Had 2 fails with the 850. Usually they show an imminent fail by first missing at speed or miss when hot in summer. This is my first sudden death fail from a coil/power stage assly. So long for now. Bob.
