MAF Sensor causes check engine light on V70-XC70 1998

My check engine light came on. Apparently it was the Mass Air Flow unit. Is this something that will cause damage to the engine if I don't soon fix it (We are short on cash and I'm trying to spend money on only what we really need).

Thanks

Clear the code. You could try a can of MAF cleaner from your autoparts store.
Eventually, your MAF will fail and the engine will no longer run properly. Do not plug/unplug the MAF while the engine is running.

If you have an NA engine, check the airline from the MAF to the throttle body for cracks.

Thanks Klaus. I saw in the archive for a similar question you recommended cleaning the corrosion from the electric plug. How would one go about doing that? I sprayed the MAF w/ MAF cleaner last time the light came on, and the light stayed off for about 3 weeks. Should I give up and buy a new one? (Is buying a used one from a salvage yard a bad idea for this part?)

With a salvage yard, you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes you get lucky and get a clean part.

FCP Groton has them for $165 (OEM). AutohausAZ has them for $180 or a generic for $92: http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=pyfbvh45haxaed45arv2mgun&pn=W0133-1600936,W0133-1660572,

Because you are on a tight budget, go to a P&P and remove a couple. Take only the cleanest one and try it. Remember, the MAF part number must match what you have on your car.

Be sure to check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and verify the air hose from the filter to the throttle body is not cracked, or the one to the turbo, if yours has one of those.

        Good luck,

        Klaus

On my 240, I removed the plug and sprayed a little electrical cleaner in it. Be careful not to get any in the MAF. As an option, you could put a a little dab of dielectric grease in the plug. I did. Someone on the RWD board said this could cause a problem with the O2 sensors. I never had a problem. Also make sure the plug is put back on snugly.
