I have 2001 v70 T5 I went from 16" to 17" rims. I had trouble with 16's.. the brake caliper was hitting the inside of the rim.. and loosening lug bolts... I now have 17" tetheys, black on a white car. 17's look a LOT better on the car. The downside, on 01's at least is that 17's will rub inside wheel well.. even with volvo's "correct" stop. You will have to add some washers to make it not rub.. but the car already has horrible turning radius as it is.

Rule of thumb: the bigger the wheel the smaller the aspect ratio. When the aspect ratio gets to 40 or less, there will be less sidewall to absorb the bumps.

You are only talking about 5% difference between 16 and 17 inch wheels. Get the 17s and put summer tires on them, then mount the 16s with good snow tires.
